Is one day enough?

DH and I are planning a one-day visit to UO/IoA. We will have a one-day, 2-park pass and are only interested in doing the Wizarding World parts of the parks (DH is mixed on huge coasters, and I get motion sick in the bathtub). Our visit will be either 12/22/19 or 12/23/19... pretty busy time of year. We will want to walk through Hogwarts and Gringotts, although I am not sure DH will choose to ride either. Is one day enough to take in both parts of Potter-World, even with crowds?

Go early and wait at the gate for when you can enter

Walk through the potter section for half the time you will be there
Take the train to the other park halfway thru your day

Take a look at the menus for the two eateries at the potter sections
Finish your day doing dinner at one of them

It will be crowded but you already know that
Do your souvenir shopping when you see something you want
Have it sent to the front of the park and held for you until it is time for you to end your park day
You get a claim ticket and that is all you show to retrieve your purchase
This is a free service for all park guests

@macraven has pretty sound advice so for me there isn't much else to say.

The only thing I'll add is, because of your comment on Gringott's with your DH.

Gringott's is not a massive and thrilling roller coaster. To be honest, I personally think it's the most tame one out of all the coasters in the resort. There is only two "roller coaster" portions which I've timed myself to be between 6-7 seconds. Those few seconds are fast and fun, but no loops, or corkscrews, and while there is a dip here and there, there are no dramatic drops. Even at the beginning portion of the ride the ride vehicles tip downward appearing as if to make a dramatic drop into a dark entry. However, once you disappear into the darkness, you actually feel as if you're going just forward rather than keep going downward. So, honestly the most intimidating about the ride is the unknown during those portions.

My mom did Gringott's and enjoyed it so I firmly believe literally ANYONE could do it and enjoy it! LOL! She is 68 and hates rollercoasters and really all rides in general, but was good with Gringotts. Forbidden Journey is a little more intense, but still not on par with a coaster. It's a different kind of experience.

To answer the question, yes I think one day is enough time to do both Potter areas. You should have time to see the rest of the parks too, especially if you're not big on doing rides. Both parks are worth seeing as much as you can!

How does Gringott's stack up against Big Thunder? I LOVE TBMRR, but it's pretty much at my limit of tolerance. I know when to brace myself for the "bunny hops" and such. I also don't mind speed, like with TestTrak, but the circular motion makes me woozy for a bit. I don't do well with anything that goes in circles (Barnstormer ate me alive) and I am not a fan of big drops (Pirates is OK, Splash definitely is NOT). I am thinking I'll be OK on Gringotts... maybe?

(I'm definitely not doing Forbidden Journey. My sister, who is less prone to motion sickness than I, rode it and was sick the rest of the day. She spent the day stretched out in the minivan, trying not to vomit, it made her so sick! Not taking that chance at all- but DH might!)

Its hard to say because they are very different experiences. Gringotts isn't a rollercoaster. Its a 3D ride, so you're wearing 3D glasses and the ride vehicle moves between a series of screens where you pause at each screen for a good 10+ seconds to watch the screen/dialogue. The most intense movement is in the beginning where the ride vehicle tilts downward as if its going to be a big drop, but its not a drop at all. Its simulated to seem that way. Otherwise, the ride vehicle quickly moves along the track between screens with quick turns around corners, but no spinning or going in a full circle. I can't handle that either. I would say Big Thunder is faster with more turns/whips and hills. I believe there are first person point of view videos on YouTube if you're nervous about Gringotts.

To add what @nkereina said, I can't think of a particular roller coaster to compare it too. The there aren't really any bunny hops. There may be ups and downs, but they're a touch smaller and a lot faster than Thunder. There isn't a slow climb of upwards, then downwards. Once you're in the roller coaster part (which both parks are complete darkness) it's a lot of twists and turns. There isn't a lot of consistent long movements and there aren't any circles, or loops. Besides, even if it did it wouldn't last long. You can watch Gringott's videos yourself and time it, it is legitimately only 6-7 seconds last time I timed it. Before you know it the roller coaster part is done, then there is the 3D elements as nkereina described, before the finish being another roller coaster bit and before you know it, it's the end and you're sending you off with a goodbye scene.

Hi leebee, I wanted to mention (just in case you were unaware) that I don't think either ride has a walk through tour at the moment, so the only way to truly experience the queue line is to stand in line and then exit at the last minute. You maybe able to see the Bank portion of Gringott's without standing in line, but I don't believe they will let you go any further. Just FYI as the wait times, maybe kinda lengthy that time of year.

OK... there is a falling part that I might have to close my eyes through; I am not good with simulator rides at all (FoP was a total nightmare, even WITH a scopolamine patch), but other than that, I think I might be OK. I can always hunker down and close my eyes, right? I am SURE DH will want to ride this!

I wouldn't try FJ in IOA, either. That one was not a comfortable experience for me. I didn't get sick, but all the moving and jerking around was enough for me. I felt like I was going to be turned upside down at one point. I guess the K-arm thing that manages the ride can make a lot of different maneuvers.
However, the Gringotts ride was fantastic. I didn't get motion sick at all. Like others have said, the duration of the transition from one screen, event to the other is very small. I loved that ride. I hope you have a wonderful time; love Universal.

The drop is real, not simulated. It is also very short. If you’re in row one you don’t drop far at all due to the way the track tilts the coaster down. There’s hardly any coaster to this “roller coaster” ride, which left me quite disappointed the first time I rode it. The cars do spin around a bit a few times. Not too quickly but something to be aware of if you have motion sickness.

As to the time question, yes, it will be enough time. Because it’s one of the busiest days of the year, you will not have enough time to do even half of all the attractions throughout the parks. If you want to ride Hagrids, you need to be there well before open and rope drop it. I suggest doing the FJ queue after that, then Hippogriff if interested, take the train, do Gringotts, and take the train back (diff each way). Do all that without stopping to look around. Wait times will continue to build throughout the day and even the train will see 60+ minute waits, especially from the Universal side. After you’ve taken the train back to Hogsmeade, then explore all you want. Buy awand now if you want but do the show at Diagon as it’s a shorter wait. Depending on what time it is when you’re done, do a few things in IOA or just walk over to Diagon. I say walk because at this point the line for the train will be huge. Explore Diagon, starting with Ollivanders if the line isn’t huge, and if there’s leftover time, see more of Universal.

Don’t forget about the shows. There’s two different Tales of Beedle the Bard. They alternate which one they perform.

If you find you have time, the Grinchmas show and the holiday parade are both excellent. Some people finish HP in four or five hours or less, some look at literally everything there is to look at, see all the shows, do all the rides, and eat in at least one restaurant. The latter will easily take six+ hours, especially on a busy day. I once spent an hour just walking around Diagon reading all the ads on the walls.

The "drop" in the beginning of Gringott's appears like it might be significant because you are looking down into darkness. In reality, I'd wager the slope is not much longer, if at all, than the ride vehicle.

My guess would be it’s two vehicle lengths total including the part of the track that moves- which means only those in the back get the full drop. After the movable track there is a bit more downward track though I don’t think it’s quite as steep.
