Is "oh my god" offensive?

I find it offensive because I don't believe you should take the Lord's name in vain. (uh-oh....religious post! But, it's the answer to your question. ;)) I have no problem with oh my goodness or oh my gosh, I just don't like hearing the word 'God' (capital or lowercase, since you can't tell the difference in speech.) used that way.

BTW- I don't say anything to the person who uses it (unless it's one of my students- Christian school, so it goes with my above statement), I just choose not to use it myself.

Yep, sums up my feelings perfectly.

We do not use it and we have taught our children not to use it for the reasons others have mentioned. I will even type out OMGoodness or OMGosh. I will also admit that I don't like when I hear others use it, but not because I am offended by it. Afterall the way one uses God's name is between God and that individual. I just find the phrase to be "tired." I remember hearing it all the time on Trading Spaces and other shows during the reveals and that has been 10 years ago or more. I thought it would've run its course by now.

I'm not religious, but I refrain from saying it because I don't want to make other people feel uncomfortable.

yes! I see that term more and moe everytime I go to Fb and someone post it on their status! Drives me insane!

I take it some of you REALY DON'T LIKE THE SONG "OMG" from USHER!!! :scared1:

this. i don't use it. i teach my children not to use it. but i don't get personally offended by someone else using it. that doesn't mean i LIKE it though.

but i also don't use curse words period. :confused3

I am not offended but my Mom would have been. I do try to use oh my goodness or something like that in order to try to respect others.

after gymnastics yesterday, my ds told me one of the other little boys said the "C" word!:scared1:

I was almost afraid to ask what the c word was.
but I did, and it was the the one that rhymes with nap.
LOL

This is one that definately offends or maybe a better word is saddens me. I don't judge those who say it because I really believe they have no idea that what they are saying is offensive but I have taught my kids not to say it and not to use OMG either.

My opinion on this has changed through the years. Growing up I didn't, it was just an expression people used without thought. When we first moved down here I learned for the first time that people found it offensive, so I just started saying Oh My Gosh in respect to other peoples feelings. Then after I became a Christian I found it offensive because I perceived it as people taking my God's name in vain. But now(still a follower of Jesus) I guess it depends on the circumstance.

I personally wouldn't say it because I believe I would be taking God's name in vain and I would also find it offensive if a fellow believer used the phrase. But if one doesn't even believe in God or serves a different god, when they're saying it they're not talking about my God at all. So I just recently started to think, should I be offended? They're either using it in reference to a god I don't believe exists or as just a meaningless expression. Doesn't mean I like hearing it, but I guess it depends on the circumstance as to whether or not I would be offended.

Not sure if that I explained that well enough, it's just my rambling thoughts. ;)

Offensive? Um, I don't think so. Do I say it? No. Our my children allowed to say it? NO! Do I scold any of the kids I know when they are in church and I hear them say it? YES!

But "offensive"? Eh.

In some ways, I find "Cheese and Crackers!" worse.

If you have been raised as an observing Christian, the exclamatory reference to God would be considered taking the Lord's name in vain-against the 10 commandments. Therefore, I don't do it very often. In my mind, OMG stands for Oh My Goodness! I can not stand hearing very young children using this phrase. In my opinion it's simply low class, having little or nothing to do with God but simply showing that they have been raised using words about which they don't EVEN have a clue regarding connotation. For those of you who use this phrase casually, what does it mean exactly? Especiallly if you don't believe in God...is there any meaning other than minor profanity?

I don't feel strongly offended if I hear it, but I don't exactly consider it polite either. - I try not to use it, and I do call DS (or any children I'm in charge of) on it.

I'm used to hearing other people say it so it doesn't offend me, but I don't say it myself. Pesky 10 Commandments thing and all.

I say it myself, so no I don't find it offensive.

I have a student that, when he doesn't get his way or is caught doing something that he shouldn't be doing, will mumble "Oh my God" under his breath. I usually just say, "He's not going to help you right now" and we continue what we were doing.

Nope don't find it offensive and say it all the time.

If you say "Oh my God," you better be praying! I do find it offensive, I don't say it, and I also don't say "OMG." I actually find it kind of sad that I had to take the "OMG" stickers out of a pack of stickers I bought for DD.

:lmao::rotfl2:

I don't find it "offensive" (ie start freaking out) but I don't like it. Religious reasons. I DO find OMFG (cringed just typing it) EXTREMELY offensive. That's just low class/trashy talk for anyone, religious or not, imho....
