Is my Canon 40D dying?

While working in post, some of my raw images came up obliviated by a layer of white and pink that seemed to be spread over the picture. I could view the image as a thumbnail, and they looked fine, but when I clicked on the raw thumbnail to enlarge it to full size for processing, the white/pink smear was there. It wasn't over the entire image, but certainly covered most of it. It was also perfectly square at its edges. Also, over just a few shots, I had a message that the image was, "corrupted" even though it opened to full size.

Now granted, I've had the 40D for several years (maybe 5 or 6) and I'm not sure what the life span is on that body, but is this a sign that the sensor is going? This only happened on a handful of shots, and the rest came through post just fine. I had to delete the messed up pics, there was nothing I could do to get them to open without the message or the overlay of color. Interestingly, the "corrupted" message did not appear with the white/pink overlay. It was either one or the other, but never both on the same image. I'm just wondering if anyone has any insight.

My processing program is "digital photo professional" a simple program that isn't fancy but works well for my needs. The photos that went screwy varied. Some were exterior in full sunlight, some were dark ride captures, so it doesn't seem related to the shot setting. Help, anyone?? :confused3

It's the cf card. It happens to me sometimes when I'm at the end of memory (may just be a coincidence, but that's when it tends to happen). I shoot in raw+jpeg cause I'm weird like that, and my jpegs are usually fine! Try reformatting your card once all the images are off.

It could be the memory card, but it could also be the camera. I'd try getting a new card rather than reformatting an old one, if you haven't tried that already. It will rule more things out in one shot. Wonky things like this can also happen when the part of the camera that writes the information is failing. And there are a few other things that can cause similar problems as well and some can be sensor related. It's a process of elimination to figure out the area causing the problem and I usually start with the simplest solution first.

Reformatting is free. :) I have a bad card though, and it happened with my 40d and now my 5d. I should just toss it, but I'm a sucker I guess, lol.

True. Reformatting is free. But it won't solve problems with corrupt cards and can actually mask problems temporarily. Cards are cheap these days and my feelings are it's better to be safe than sorry. Aside from that, I know DolewhipDVC's posts on this board and I'm betting reformatting was already tried, if he wasn't already reformatting after every download. A practice all digital users should really follow anyway.

Thanks for the reply ladies. I dropped in a new card and will try that out. My guess is that was the problem; I HOPE that was the problem!! :thumbsup2
