Is Meg a princess??? Talk amongst yourselves...

I’m not sure. If you look at the other Disney princesses, for the most part they are either born royal or marry royalty. Even Moana and Pocahontas are the daughters of chiefs, which would be royalty of a sort. Since Hercules gives up his “godliness” to stay with her, technically he could no longer be considered “royal”, so therefore by staying with him she does not gain any type of royal status.

However, if the sole criteria for being a Disney princess is that by the end of the movie the heroine has proved herself to be a good person who puts others first, then she would qualify due to the changes her character makes.

Mulan is the notable exception. While Captain Shang is notably of a higher status, he isn't really royalty or anything. Mulan pretty much earned her own status anyway, but essentially leaves to take a job.

The biggest injustice is how Kida is not considered one of the official Disney Princesses!

I always felt that Mulan’s status was given to her by the Emperor, much like a person today could be made a Duke or a Knight.

Nope. She was not born royal (Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Moana), she did not marry royal (Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Tiana), and she did not perform a significant act of heroism (which is why Mulan is a princess).

That being said, I LOVE Meg's big song "I Won't Say in I'm Love."
