Is MB a wash????

All the 'talk' about MB does get one thinking of add on's. DH and I have talked and 100 points is just not something for us to consider. But from what I understand, you can add 25 points at a time if you don't finance.

But then you think about paying $10 more per point, and that doesn't 'set' well (especially when we only paid $70 a point just 11 months ago when we joined--without giving back any points).

As I thought about it, it almost seems like MB is a 'wash'. In other words, if you keep the points, you pay $84 a point, but if you 'sell back you points to Disney', then you pay $74. It doesn't seem like you really gain anything, other than having to put out less money up front (but you don't get to enjoy using your points).

Is that the deal? Is it much different than 'renting' for $10 a point? Just trying to make sure I understand this.
Thanks,
DJ

Don't forget you still pay annual dues (prorated, perhaps) on the points you give back under MB.

Wow! That makes it sound like a 'bad' deal now. I didn't realize you had to pay dues on points that you gave back. Is that really true? That just doesn't make sense! So what makes MB a good deal?

Actually, I think you expressed it rather well. MB is good if you don't need the points anyway, or you are within 6 months of the end of your use year. But if you do need the points, then MB isn't an incentive to buy. If you are willing to go to the trouble of renting your points, you can accomplish the same thing as MB. We were offered add-on points last week for OKW, and were planning to just rent the points to off-set not getting MB, but $84 per point scared us enough in this uncertain economy that we decided against adding on at this time. We would have liked getting an additional 110 pts, but it just didn't seem right, when we are not quite finished paying off the last add-on.:(

You pay pro-rated dues from the day you buy. Say you buy 100 points on 4/1/03, you would pay annual dues x .75 (3/4 of the year left) even though you would not be getting new points until later in the year.

If you don't plan to use the points before your next use year starts, then it's easier than trying to rent the points, look at the hassle one poster had this week. I bought in early September with an April use year and didn't plan to go until May, so I used MB. Saved $10 a point and got a full year of points on 4/1.

I agree that MB must analyzed and a determination made as to whether it fits your situation. For us it made sense.
We were planning future vacations and realized we wanted more points. Since all our current vacations are booked we did not need the points now. We were offered 2002 points that we could use for MB, so we still get 2003 points, long before we actually need them. With this in mind, MB made since. We could rent for probably a maximum of $10 per point, but MB is no hassle and you get maximum value. As far as the prorated dues, we figured, with price increases, by the time we "need" the points, the price will probably be that much more.

Oh, I agree. To say it is a 'wash', means that either way (paying $84 and using this year's points or paying $74 and giving back this year's points) works out to be about the same thing. So which ever works for you best is the way to go. So if you want less than 100 points, or to buy at a non-MB offering resort, it really isn't more costly (as long as you use this year's points). I was just trying to 'figure' out the benefits; and it seems like a 'wash' cost wise, but as a customer, you can choose the way it works best for you (sort of like the 0% financing or $2000 off options, they usually work out to be the same thing in the long run, but depending on your circumstances, one way may be more appealing than the other).

It's a wash compared to renting out as long as you don't buy more points than you need or want just because of the MB.
