Is Kazaa legal or not?

I am so confused! Can we or Can't we download from there legally?

They have a $29.95/year thing...

Any info?

I think if you pay for some sort of plan it is legal...like itunes where you pay per song.

Actually it IS legal b/c it's not based in the U.S., much like Imesh is the same way (I use Imesh because it searches both Imesh AND Kazaa users)

Just a warning... legal or not my company is CONSTANTLY being called to fix computers that were damaged by virus's and other junk that kazaa adds to your machine. Since we deal with businesses to say the bosses get unhappy is putting it mildly!
There are some trojans and virus's that you can catch through kazzaa that it seems like regular antivirus software doesn't always get.
It's almost like an office joke, someone will call and complain their machine is running horribly, we send a tech out and everyone rolls their eyes when they find out kazaa was on the machine.
You also can't remove it by uninstalling it.

Just a warning some of the other software on that page is VERY powerful, especially Hijackthis. It's very easy to screw up your machine if you don't know what you are doing with that product!

For downloading music, I like itunes, I think it's much safer

I looked at Itunes, though. Apparently you can only use it if you have Windows XP or Windows 2000? I have Windows ME in my computer, so I don't think I can use that.

Might I recommend IMesh? It puts spy stuff in your system (almost anything now will), but it runs a heck of a lot better then kazaa...

I hadn't heard of imesh so I went to take a look, it certainly does download adware and spyware to your computer. You might be best off doing neither and going to the store and buying the CD's

Kazaa as a program is perfectly legal. However it can be used to illegally share copyrighted materials.

You can now download music at www.walmart.com it is a per song fee of like 80 or 85 cents. Might want to look into this.~KPmom

A friend of mine who just got a computer paid for the Kazaa service. He asked me if it was legal and I wasn't sure. So since he's already paid for the service, I doubt he'd download from any where else.

I'm guessing based on the responses that YES it is legal.

Is that correct?

It's legal to use kazaa, it's NOT legal to download music that you haven't paid for even using kazaa so it depends what you do with it

I would not recommend Imesh. To download it you have to download "GAIN" ad software--it is not a choice, without GAIN you don't get IMESH. We started getting popups, more and more until months later your computer would not work for any program but being online. DH tried to fix it to load turbotax and lost my hard drive--AND my 250 downloads! Yes IMesh is easy to use, but getting all the ads and popups is NOT worth it.
Since then I have tried Win MX (they said I don't have some sort of TCB port and even though I have a cable modem they have me on dial up speed--I got 2 songs but it took most of one day, forget that) and then Morpheus (almost IMMEDIATELY my computer slowed WAY down so I got rid of that one fast).
Kazaa light is on my list to try, possibly itunes, still looking for that magic sight where I can even find the old stuff and not get a ton of spyware with it.

iTunes is totally different than kazaa or Imesh.

You pay per mp3 with iTunes and it is legal.

Kazaa lite is free.

You can find it out there somewhere.

Kazaa has screwed up our computers so bad that I did the quick restore on one of them and I am planning on doing the other very soon. I was told by some tech guys to not install their program because it willtake over your whole computer...of course this was after the kids already did it. So i have 2 computers that were less then 6 months old and the one I haven't fixed runs so slow and has so much crap popping up on it it is a joke. It runs like my 7 year old computer!

One other way of downloading songs free is to check the band/artist's website for songs you want. Oftentimes, as a free promo for that particular band/artist, they will allow some songs to be downloaded for free (which is how I got a copy of " When You Come Back To Me Again" by Garth Brooks).
