We have a late flight out of hawaii at 7:30 and decided to use 19 points to keep our room all day instead of checking out at 11:00. We thought that GOD forbid are flight back home was canceled due to weather (January) we'd have a place to stay overnight and give us extra time at the resort without rushing out. Here's the rub other family members who are DVC members think it's a WASTE of points to do this,so we wanted the opinion of our friends here on the DIS Boards. Thanks !!!

I think it is worth the points!

Even if your flight is not delayed, having the whole day to get to the airport is nice as well!

I agree. And if your family members don't think it's a good use of points, tell them not to do it themselves. It's 19 lousy points, fer crying out loud!

I agree that if you have the points it would be a good way to use them!

I say this, and have thought about booking the night before when I have an early morning landing in MCO, but I've never actually booked the extra night. Good for you, if you do! Enjoy the room.

I think that is a good idea. :thumbsup2 It's your vacation...and your points. ;)

Absolutely NOT a waste of points. I plan to do the very same thing.
Enjoy your day at the resort, spend time by the pool and at the lagoon. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon with some snacks/drinks on your balcony then shower up for your return flight. We did this last year while staying at Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club. Very much worth the cost for the advantages it gives you.

I think it's an excellent use of points...I hate being 'homeless' for most of the day when we have a late flight out. I haven't booked an extra night yet, but next time that scenerio happens I plan to.

We currently have done the same thing for our quick trip to WDW in February. We are going to FL anyway and decided to stop at WDW for just one night. But then the flights came out and it was 7:00 pm so I booked the 2nd night. I figured it was well worth it to have a place to stay.

A few years ago we had the same situation, but only a 5:00 pm flight and didn't reserve the room and regretted it so I think it is well worth the points.

What a great idea! We have a late return flight as well ... why didn't I think of that? Good job!

We had a red eye flight out of Maui this past March and booked the extra night. It was great. We spent a wonderful, relaxing day. DH watched whales from the Lanai, I washed clothes and packed. We went out for a nice lunch and had wine and appetizers on the lanai before leaving for the airport. It sure beat rushing out the door in the morning and then being homeless all day. Use the 19 points and maximize your stay in Hawaii!

I agree that it's a very good use of 19 points. I hate being homeless all day long. I see people hanging out in the lobby of BWV for hours waiting for their flights. I'd so much rather use the points and have a room all day long than hang out in the lobby.

Did those people pay for your points? If not, why do they get to vote on how you use them.

I have done this.

How I choose to use my points is not up for debate by anyone else IMHO.

I had never thought of doing this until recently when someone I know mentioned that she books the extra night at BWV. I think it is a good idea. But just as an FYI, Aulani has a lounge area next to Member Hall that is two rooms with sofas, tvs and showers. We used this just to change last Friday. Had we known about this, we would not have rushed from the pool to shower in our room before we left. We had a 4:00 flight.

I probably wouldn't given the specifics but it's a reasonable approach. Remember you'll have to leave the resort by maybe 4:30 or earlier and if it's a weekday, must earlier due to traffic. Return a rental cal, get to the airport around 5:30. You can always go to the pool, shower, etc without a room. OTOH, if you can get in a nap, you'll be far ahead due to the overnight nature of the flights.

Yes we did think about the lounge but like the fact of taking our time to pack and having our own bathroom. :)

I have done this several times! Your points, your decision!

Not a bad idea but I've used a lounge at other Hawaii resorts in order to relax and shower prior to a late flight. Usually they have housekeeping checking frequently on the lounge and sometimes you have it all to yourself. Just another option for those who don't have the points to use.

That's what we are doing this December. We chose a really late return flight so it was almost like we have another day in Hawaii. Leaving out of Honolulu at 11pm. We figured we would just hang around the resort and do our last minute shopping and then we are gonna visit diamond head. But while we are at the resort we will most likely utilize the lounge for a little bit. Great idea to use points for an extra day, though :goodvibes

I think that's an excellent idea! I have to keep this in mind - for WDW also!

We want to thank everyone who took the time to respond to our post. We can't wait to have our family members read them. :grouphug:
