Is it worth going to HH in winter?

We live on the other side of the state and it gets pretty chilly here in the winter. Was wondering if we will have enough activities to entertain the kids. We are not DVC members, but got a great postcard rate and would love to try the resort. With it too chilly for the beach, what else is there to do? Kids are 10, 6, and 14mos. Thanks.

Well, if not the beach, there's always the pool.

We'll be there across New Year, so I'll let people know what it's like. My anticipation is that we'll have a great time.

The only indoor pool I'm aware of on the island is at the Marriot Grand Ocean resort. You can find rentals there.

We are going to Hilton Head Christmas week 12/26-12/30 and asked the same question. We usually go to Orlando but don't have enough vacation days this year. We are from New York and usually drive down. Our children are 6, 4, and 3. We also want to purchase points, we have already purchased points and added them on to our parents contract. But we want more points (we have only 55) and hope to transfer our points over to our new membership #. I have probably made this sound very confusing. Anyway, to answer your question, the pools are open and according to the disney salesperson they are heated. Besides that Disney has childrens activities going on and there are other things you can do like horseback riding, fishing etc. Please keep in mind Hilton Head is a more laid back vacation. No amusement parks around. I hope I answered some of your questions.

HH has many activities which are available year round0 weather permitting. The resort itself has many things to do for both children and adults. There are games, craft activities, crabbing, nature walks, cooking classes, wine tasting, Behind the Ears tour, etc. The staff is available all year and can help anyone find something to do!

The island has lots of dining options and many unique shops to explore. There are some historical sites to visit, as well as museums and some theater options.

In addition, tennis and golf are available all year.

Enjoy the resort and area- it does have a lot to offer!

We spent a week there in early March and it was fun! No beach swimming but we had a couple days at each end of our trip that were warm enough midday for the heated pool & hot tub. Besides that, we enjoyed the naturalist-led swamp walk, learned to throw a shrimp net, played goofy bingo, saw a very good magician, painted fish print t-shirts, played shuffleboard, billiards & indoor board games, walked the beach for seashells, rented sea kayaks (close encounters with dolphins in broad creek), took a gourmet cooking class and made a few new friends over dinner together in our room. If weather permits, try the evening campfire sing-along & s'mores.

Your children might also enjoy the scavenger hunt, looking for signs of "Shadow" (their mascot golden retriever), evening bedtime stories with cookies in the den and other activities geared toward the younger set as well. There are hammocks and a playground at the resort too.

Fishing and crabbing are futile in winter there, with the season resuming in mid-April. There are also dolphin watch cruises, horseback riding, bicycle rentals, nearby golf/tennis and other "for fee" activities. The dens (at the resort and at the beach house) both have fireplaces so don't hesitate to wander the resort, even in bad weather. While there, call ahead before walking to meet for an outdoor activity. When the weather turns bad, they replace outdoor activities with indoor group games.

Our week was an exchange via II (timeshare). We enjoyed our full week, though we just love HHI and have been to various resorts on HHI. 4-5 days in wintertime would be a terrific vacation if you are not sure whether you will find enough to do on HHI with your family in the winter. Keep your expectations open... ask them to fax you a recreational schedule ahead of time... remember that it's an upscale, yacht club-country club atmosphere on the island, with a relaxed, family-friendly theme at the Disney resort. Have fun! :)

We also will be there with our 3 kids Christmas week (17/14/12). For my teens, they like to play pool at Big Murgie's Den and we all rent bikes and ride around the Island. Last Christmas, my kids really didn't partake in any of the planned activities, except we all went on the tour of the resort where they tell about the history of the buildings and point of the many hidden mickeys in the resort. Ask about the hidden Mickeys in the check in area...it is really amazing!

We also go to at least one movie that week. There are 2 movie theaters open on the Island (one is a mutiplex (small) and the other is a really small 2 screen theater). Last year the weather was too cold except for a mandentory 15 minute dip in the pool, just to say we did it. For us anyway, it is really just a chance to relax.
