I have a goose feather down comforter that needs to be cleaned. It is also pretty lifeless, very flat compared to how it was when purchased 3 years ago. The dry cleaners want $32 to clean it. Have any of you ever had this done? Will it add new life into the comforter, or just simply make it cleaner? I think I paid $99 originally, so I am wondering if I should just go ahead and buy a new one.

I put mine on the clothesline to fluff it up...IT works GREAT to restore the feathers...Dry cleaning won't fluff it back up.

I dry clean it only once a season. I have had it 12 years, and it is an awesome Duvet.:thumbsup2

Look closely at the label. I can machine was mine and dry it. I do have to do it at a laundromat with the big machines. It came out really nice and fluffy.

If it fits in your washer, you can wash it yourself. I wash my king sized down comforter in my washer. It takes several cycles to dry completely though. It won't fluff up unless it's completely dry. They say to put in a few clean tennis balls in the dryer with it, but I've never done that.

I throw mine in the washer and dryer. If might take 2 drying cycles to make sure all the moisture is out. Nice and fluffy whenever I want it.

Try putting it in the dryer on fluff with a sneaker in there. The sneaker will beat against the comforter and help fluff it back up.

I asked a question about this a few months ago. I ended up washing it TWICE and drying it in the dryer. Someone suggested throwing some tennis balls in to help the fluffing process. I did and it turned out pretty darn good! What do you have to lose by trying?

The label does say Dry Clean Only. It's the goose feather kind.

Mine is goose down. I don't think I ever checked the label. I probably learned here that people toss them in the machine.:)

I'm taking mine to the cleaners on Friday. $25.
Cat had a nosebleed on it

I wash my goose down comforter every season. I have a front loading washer so I can do it at home, but it turns out great!

Mine's goose down and says to dry clean only. I've washed it many times--pukey cat.

Mine is a queen size down blanket. Not quite as thick as a comforter. I wash it at the laundromat in a front loading machine along with other blankets. It takes FOREVER to dry in the driers though. Totally worth cleaning. We love our blanket. :goodvibes

BTW, the label on mine says washable. I wash our down pillows too.

Ditto (minus the cat). I always wash mine. I have a dog and two 3 year olds...so it gets its fair share of stains. I wash it quite often, actually. I just take it to the laundromat and wash it in one of the big industrial size machines (it's a king size comforter). Just make sure you dry it THOROUGHLY. If it's still damp at all on the inside it tends to smell weird.

we must wash feather pillow once every year or once every two years.
I have purchased feather pillow and my seller gave valuable advice on how to maintain them.

Other than my late DH's suits, I have never dry cleaned anything that is labeled "dry clean only".. Goes in the washer, goes in the dryer, and comes out fine..:goodvibes

This wouldn't happen to be YOUR website, melodie98, would it? You went to an awful lot of trouble for your first post, to do a DIS search for an old thread and then make sure we Googled and got that ONE website, when there are so many other hits when people just Google "cleaning down comforter."

Otherwise, welcome to the DIS. :teeth:
