Hi,

I'm new to the forum. Got 2 kids (7 and 8 years old), residing in Northern VA. Wish to find out whether it's worth buying a disney points. Please share your thoughts. Thanks!

Are you referring to buying into the Disney Vacation Club? If so you will find a ton of info on the DVC forums. DH and I purchased our first ownership in 1993 through Disney and 3 years ago a resale through the Timeshare Store. Wonderful experience with both. Disney you can finance the Timeshare Store you can't. Good Luck and happy shopping!

Welcome to the DIS! If you are interested in the Disney Vacation Club I would head over to the DVC forum. We have been to disney many times, but we don't feel that DVC is right for us. We like to stay in either the Poly or Grand Floridian and the closest thing to that would be Bay Lake Towers, which look amazing. We feel that we would end up paying more money if we were to buy DVC, then if we just paid as we go. I know tons of people love DVC, so make sure you check out the DVC forum I mentioned above. Hope this helps!

Welcome to the DIS Boards! (We are in Fairfax...glad to see someone else local to us!) We just bought into DVC this past May. All OPs are correct in that there is a wealth of information on here. We ended up buying direct in May because of wanting to use our points quickly among other things. We are strongly considering purchasing any add-on points via resale. Which resort are you looking at? That will play a big role in whether or not direct/resale makes sense. There are closing costs on both ends, some great per point pricing on the resale market. The one downside is that Disney has the right of first refusal...so that can take time and patience.

As far as DVC goes, we LOVE it! In fact DH and I had been pondering it since 2006. We only wish we had joined sooner before costs had increased! We have been going to WDW several times a year for short weekend stays so it made sense for us. Make sure to take time and do your research! Please don't hesitate to ask any questions!

Good luck :goodvibes

Most DVC owners feel the same way -- we all wish we bought in sooner.

I'm a relatively new DVC owner, having purchased my first set of points in April 2008. I can't imagine going to WDW any other way. It is SO worth it. No, it's not an investment -- many posters will tell you that it does not likely increase in value (with some exceptions), but it does give you deluxe vacations for the next 50 years at today's prices! I could never afford to stay in deluxe accomodations on cash. As a matter of fact, I am staying in a 2BR next March with family. I priced it out as cash and the cost for the week (room alone) was over $9,000! :scared1: Tack on food, park tickets, airfare, tax, etc., and the price easily goes over $10 grand!

There are a lot of great people with a wealth of knowledge on the DVC DIS threads. I'm sure you will find yourself well informed in a very short period of time. Good luck with your decision! :goodvibes

Thanks for all your info.

Btw, we only go to disneyworld once 3 years ago. We'll definitely not wanting to visit Disney several times a year! So, maybe it's not worth to buy a resell (I'm referring to the BWV or BCV).

Last time we flew there, rented a minivan, and rented a 3beds/3baths townhouse in Windsor Hills Resort (2 miles from Disney). Very nice! It had our own private swimming pool and 42 LCD in the living room.

I truly appreciated for all the thoughts. Thanks once again!

if you are happy staying offsite at places like windsor hills (which i have heard is very nice), then i'd agree that DVC is probably not for you. you can definitely save money staying offsite...DVC works better for people who prefer to stay on disney property.

I would look into renting a reservation from a DVC owner. You will save money compared to Disney's rates and you can experience staying at a DVC resort first hand. DVC resorts fill up fast so plan on renting at least 8 months in advance.

We'd love to try it out too since we'd never stayed in any Disney resorts before. Except once my hub had a business trip and stayed in a moderate Disney resort called: Colorado.. or other name.

He said he had a terrible experience there! The hotel is far away from the conference building in Disney (more than 15 minutes walking). Plus, the foods are sucks in Disney. Next, he couldn't even see the TV in the room at night due to the size of the TV (extremely small). He said he would not want to stay in Disney hotel again!

Jeepers Crowe!!

Sounds like he stayed at Coronado Springs which is indeed a moderate. DVC is Deluxe accomodations. Try renting from a DVC member like a PP said. Give Disney a second chance. :thumbsup2

Seems like the BWV or BCV are booked this year. So, we'll try to book next year from a DVC member and try it out at either BWV or BCV.

Thanks!:thumbsup2

When I visited disney they wanted $96/pt for the BWV
We purchased our property through the reseller on this board with 200 points left over, sold them to discount the overall price we ended up paying $72/pt.
and I do not plan on walking around in 2054 when the new resorts continue through. And even if i can still walk I probably will forget that I own a timeshare:rotfl:

I think Betty Prikerel is great but not at $24/ point
