Is it usually too windy to wear a hat on deck?

I know that weather changes, but based on personal experience, hats on deck? will it fly into the ocean? My first cruise will be to Alaska if that makes any difference, but I plan to do more than one.

I wore a hat every day and it never flew off. It wasn't very windy though from what I remember. I think this question would also depend on how tight you wear your hats..

On decks 4 and 9 you'll be fine because it's pretty protected. On deck 10 it can get quite windy when the ship is moving at a good clip. For slow cruising, depending on the wind (and the hat) you'll probably be okay. We wore hats on Tracy Arm day and we were fine.

LOL, Thanks guys, I love to wear my hats, but my head is huge, so it's hard to find them in my size I would hate to loose one. I'll stick with the one that has a bit of elastic in it for this next cruise pirate::firefight:santa::wizard:

Were you in Alaska?

Depends on where you are on the ship, ship speed, wind speed and the hat. Mostly though one can walk around with little worry. Forward on an upper deck outside of a windscreen may be breezy.

Totally depends on weather conditions. On an eastern Caribbean itinerary last summer I saw one day the winds on deck so strong it blew a woman's full beer off a table (in a plastic cup), then other days it was very calm. Hard to tell far in advance what type of conditions you'll have.

It really depends on how windy it is, and the type of hat you are wearing.

Depends on the speed of the ship and the wind direction. I have been on upper decks and had a hard time standing up in the when the ships was sailing at 20 knots into a 20 knot wind.

Someone mentioned Tracy Arm. In AK, when you are cruising through the glacier bays, the ship moves very slowly. However, on the Caribbean cruises, especially on the first day of sail, the Fantasy and Dream tend to be hauling keel and I've found the upper decks to be crazy windy, especially at the rail. You may be fine towards the mid-line of the boat, but I also would not count on being able to wear a hat at sea.
