Is It True? Theater at SSR

I heard that the Theater at SSR that was once used for the Disney institute may open to members. I also heard that Disney was dragging their feet about opening it due the theater in DTD. Any one have any intel on this? I love movies, even if they showed old Disney flicks and cartoons would be fantastic. :earboy2:

You might find some old info if you do a quick search. IIRC, the Theater is not part of SSR or DVC...but it owned by a separate Disney company (along with a few other buildings located at SSR). There are no plans to use it for anything (other than the weekly member updates which are held there now).

Oh that's too bad. I think it would be wonderful if they did plays, skits and one act shows in there.

This harks back to my big concern when I saw SSR...lots of big blocky buildings. The resort is so big that it actually needs an anchor of its own. Plays or something like an interactive dinnershow would be great. Non-resort guests could be shuttled in from DTD rather than being permitted to park.

What a great idea!!

They could do something similar to the hoop de doo (which is ALWAYS) sold out.

And, what a great way to get people over to look at SSR!!

Then, they could still use the theatre in the day for member updates.

I agree...SSR needs something big, different, etc. Something that gives SSR an identity.

I have no earthly idea why the buildings on the SSR property were allowed to be "split up" (for lack of a better term) rather than all of them going to DVC. It makes no sense to me...but I'm hardly *in the know*. :)

Sometimes I wish SSR sales would slow down, so that DVC would consider adding new and exciting amenities to jazz up the resort a little. As long as it's selling well, I don't forsee any changes to their current plan.

at least there is a restuarant (food court) onsite - all the BWV restuarants are along the BW....

I was really surprised when DVC did this - I really expected to here that there are restuarants all over DD - why built another one?

I am very glad it is there.

does SSR have room service?

I think that DVC and WDW is using it great location to DD for their sales.

I mean if you like to go shopping at DD or go partying at PI - you can't get a better resort!

In my opinion, it only makes sense to farm-out management of the cinema to a Disney business unit that specializes in such things--much the same way that the LBV Golf Course is certainly managed by the recreation department and the Spa is managed by an outside organization.

But really we're still talking about an entity that falls under the Disney umbrella. If SSR / DVC wanted to use the theater for some regularly-scheduled activity, I'm sure there are very few roadblocks keeping that from happening.

Remember, we're still talking about a resort that is only 20-25% of its eventual size. Check back in a year or two and I'll be shocked if there isn't something happening in the theater.

We were at SSR just before Christmas and asked a CM about future plans for the theater. She told us that DVC had wanted to show Disney films (both old and newer ones, but not ones currently being shown in theaters) for DVC members but that the movie theater at DTD wouldn't agree to terms. Apparently the theater at DTD has a say in the decision and didn't want competition from a theater at SSR. No idea if this information is factual but it's what we were told so I'm passing it on.

Hey, maybe I can start a new rumor....

I heard that, once SSR is nearly fully built, that the Theatre will be transformed into a self-serve buffet restaurant. They are going to replace every other row of seats with tables, and it will be like the Sci-Fi Drive in: watching Disney movies, cartoons, shorts while you eat. The buffet option was needed to fee the large number of guests at an 18-building SSR.

IMHO - YMMV

That would be OUTSTANDING! I truly hope that happens. That would be perfect! Thanks to all for the replies. A dinner theater would be nice too. Perhaps all the legends from NY like Sleepy Hollow or Rip Van Winkle. You know, to stay with the theme of up-state NY.

Cheers all
