Well, the Emergency Rooms are full of kids who stepped out in front of buses because their hair was hanging in their eyes!

I am surprised so many parents are willing to buy these for their kids!

Maybe I am just an over-protective mother - but h*ll would freeze over before I would buy these for my DS! These are accidents waiting to happen!

I know many things can cause injury. My 12 year old niece was biking across the street from her house and hit the curb at the wrong angle, fell, and broke her arm so bad she had to have surgery! So I understand that many things kids use can cause injury. The difference with Heelys is that many kids do not use protective gear (helmets, pads) which can lead to more serious injuries. Plus many of the kids that use Heelys are wearing them in inappropriate places and in a careless manner!

I'm surprised at the number of people on this thread that seem to be arguing just to argue. This has nothing to do with kids being kids, this is about kids wearing SKATES in a theme park or a grocery store. Why would you let your kids wear SKATES to a grocery store????

As the OP, I didnt know this was going to turn into a wierd thread that someone has already requested to be locked, I just wanted to know if it was true that these things are in the parks.

And now that I know to look out for them on my upcoming trip, thank you for the replies that answered my question! Thats all I wanted to know!

Its not so blue about 10:30 at night, now is it?

And even in the daytime, it can be azure or gray or even plum-tinted.

Let's not start saying the sky is blue at Disney, just because it is in some places.

We saw 2 men (28-30-ish) coming off Soarin' wearing them! I don't like them much, accident waiting to happen in Disney anyways with the amount of children using them.

well, right now, the sky is gray here in Bama.

And when the sky is BLUE in Epcot, its BLUE at the MK. SO THERE!

I saw a couple kids with them when I was down there, but I didn't see any behavior that could be considered dangerous. The kids that were rolling were under control and weren't in anyone's way any more than they would have been walking. I do think these kids are headed for some Achillies Tendon problems when they get older from walking on their toes when they aren't skating.

Just back from 12/19-1/2 trip. They were everywhere. Especially after Christmas presents were opened. Only saw a couple of kids fall on their rears, but they are annoying. I used a scooter and tried to go up the handicap ramp to The Land at EPCOT. Almost got run over by kids skating down the ramp.

Sad but true. I was there Dec 27 & 28, saw a lot of kids on Heelys. Only a few flagrant abuses but definately saw it happening. At that point, between the smokers, kids on heelys, massive bottlenecking, food lines requiring a fastpass and other assorted overcrowding problems, I'm sure wheel enforcement was not on top of the CM's list, lol. Kept waiting to see someone run over, but as far as that goes, the strollers and wheelchairs were WAAAY more lethal IMHO.

I could not have said it better myself, we were in the parks from 12/27- 12/31 and your observation are right on the money. They need a better way to left people know that NO SMOKING means NO .

I looked into the safety issues before buying them...and believe me there are no reports of emergency rooms full of heely fatalities. The safety issue that brings the most people into emergency rooms are auto accidents. The rest is an amalgam of other inherent dangers of life on earth.

All types of injuries occur every day from walking, running, skipping, skiiing, somersaults, climbing trees, diving into pools, swimming, baseball, football, falling off a chair, riding a bike, riding amusement rides, swinging on swings, riding a segway, playing frisbee, tripping, dancing, eating, flossing, marching in a parade, falling out of bed...and even paper cuts when reading a good book.

Don't forget...it was the dreaded ball that tripped the Burger Meister, down the steps, and led to the banning of all sorts of childhood amusements in the name of order and safety.

And grandma got run-over by those flying reindeer...they should be banned, as well.

Maybe not fatalities but I work with several orthopedic surgeons who also have seen many broken bones from those stupid things and they're just annoying and dangerous to other people as well. They don't belong in the parks or in any crowded public place, imho.

I've responded to one of these threads before but, hey, every argument needs a rebuttal, right?

I have an eight year old that has Heelys and that is getting new ones for his birthday. We would never let him wear them at Disney because I am way too commando and they would tire him out!

They are not "lazy-making" shoes as it takes a lot of coordination, core strength, and muscles to ride them properly. Think about riding a skateboard for hours at a time. Every muscle has to be tightened to maintain a good "flow" and you have to push off fairly hard each 8-10 feet.

As far as danger, I find that my son and his friends get hurt all the time playing football and basketball (recreational in the backyard) and none have been hurt Heelying. Since they are not off the ground far and most do not go incredibly fast even a fall usually results in a skinned knee at the most. I can't say the same for getting hit on a bike or a hard game of tackle football!

The core of the issue is parents letting their kids do what they want because they are too lazy to supervise. Heelys are not the problem. Bad parenting is.
DS would never be allowed to wear them in a crowded place and if he interferes with one person the wheels would be out.

Well I was almost mowed down by a woman running with a stroller . I saw lots of heelys 12/23-12/29 most kids were just using them to pass time or be towed by parents...I had one discussion with a Grandparent who said his GS was told by a CM that they were no allowed in parks...so someone is working out there!!!

My girls wanted Heely's for Christmas but I told them unless they are planning on putting a helmet on everytime they walk out the door they better keep them off of the I want list from Santa. They are dangerous! Kids (and parents) do not unerstand that they are skates and they do not reqiure their kids to wear helmets and use them in a crowd free place!
