used a Disney toy as encouragement NOT to scream and cry while getting 4 stitches in his foot today? :confused3 And that I got him talking about his last trip to WDW with a self-admitted Disney nut nurse???

Poor DS(3) stepped on an empty plexiglass snowglobe :scared1: at the sitter's house today and talking Disney was the only thing I could think of to keep him distracted! Oh boy... I think I can officially call myself, and my son addicts...

When we went shopping for his good boy bribe, he picked out a soft Tinkerbell to give his baby sister for Christmas! :rolleyes1

In my eyes, absolutely not! IMO, you've got a little boy who has gone through enough trauma and pain, and offering a "reward" (that also served as a great distraction) in such a circumstance isn't going to ruin his morals and character.

You are the best judge of how to help your child through such a situation. And there's nothing like "Disney Distractions"!

Hope he's feeling better now, poor man!

No it is a well known technique called distraction! We always did that with kids in the ER and if you knew what would work then God Bless you! I would have thanked you profusely when I was working. If you can get a kid talking about something he is really interested in then the time can fly and the Dr would be done suturing and the child would be like wow that was quick. Unfortunately it doesn't work for the initial painful part but for the rest of the job it really does work. It also helps you as Mom present a calm steady presence which is of utter importance in how easy the task gets done,

As far as the reward, when was the last time you did something without getting something from it? He deserved it and we all reward ourselves.

I bribed DGS with ANY toy in wal-mart he wanted when we were in the ER last winter. Your heart breaks and you will do anything to make it better. It was as hard on you as it was on him I am sure!!!!!!

You have to use whatever you have in your arsenal! Getting stitches can be traumatic and if it takes the promise of a Disney toy to get through it then that's what you have to do. I promised ice cream to my boys yesterday if they were good for their H1N1 vaccines. They did fine and off to get ice cream we went. Also, don't think of it as a bribe. Think of it as a reward that can be earned.:)

Not at all you did a great job, it also says alot that he picked out a toy to give to his baby sister.

I remember talking to my son about various trips when he broke his elbow and they had to give him and IV, and were examining his arm. Anything that helps keep their mind off what is going on, makes it easier for the nurses and doctors and overall better for you child. The only comment he made the whole time was when they put the IV in the opposite arm then the one he broke. He wanted to know why they were putting the pain medicine in that arm, when the other arm was the one that hurt.
