I have so far done 5 1/2 marathons. I am signed up for the Goofy in 2010. So I was thinking I should get a marathon under my belt by then. My DS wants me to do one with him at the end of Sept. which is about 15 - 16 weeks away.

My question is it possible to go from a 1/2 marathon to a full in 16 weeks?

I am a walker and probably carrying about 40 pds more then I would like to be.

What do you all think?

Kim, I may be in the same boat as you. I just found out that I got into the NYC marathon which is just about 20 weeks away. Not 100% sure I can do it this year due to other commitments, but if I can, it's going to be a mad struggle to get into shape. My plan is to use John Bingham's plan from Marathoning For Mortals and follow it closely. I think it's a 20 week plan, but you can combine the early weeks since the mileage is very low at that point. For example, you can do week 2 the first week, then Week 4 the second week, etc. and you should be on track by the second month. As long as the pace requirements are as generous as the Disney events, you should be able to do it. Plus, it will be great training for the Goofy.

Congratulations, Jeanne! That should be quite the experience!

Kim, I don't know what to tell you. My personal choice is to not do a marathon before the Goofy. I don't want to know how bad it will hurt! Might scare me off!

But the MofM schedule starts low. You can pick it up where you are if you want to give it a go!

Take care! No getting hurt before the Goofy!

Jean, that is awesome!!!! You go girl!!!! That will be sooo exciting!!!!

Connie, you know what I never thought about getting injuried.....yikes I don't know what to do.

Kim, what are the pace requirements for the September event? I certainly wouldn't do anything where I had to knock myself out, but one with a generous allotment could be good training for Goofy and leave you with several months to recover.

As for me, the NYC marathon is still up in the air. If I do it, I may just end up volunteering and/or scream-teaming in January. I still haven't signed up for any WDW event, but will probably not feel like doing much after NYC since it is pretty tough. My daughter is signed up fo the Goofy, so we will be down there regardless.

Hey, I went from training for a half to doing a full in 10 weeks -- so get out there!!! :rotfl:

You can do the one in Sept - no sweat. Using MfM and count backwards from the event to find out what week you're on. The early mileage is really low and since you just did a half, no worries. Think you'll have plenty of time to recover before Jan. Like Jean said, just make sure the pace requirements aren't too tough.

Jean - Congrats! I want to do NY someday. Will start entering next year.

Ya Liz, but you don't count you are just goofy;)

I don't know what to do....part of me agrees with Connie about not risking injury and not knowing how nuts I am for actually thinking I can do a GOOFY, but the other part wants to know I can at least do a full before I do Goofy.....

Jeanne, NYM would be awesome!!!!!!. Look forward to seeing you guys Marathon weekend.!!!!!!

Kimmer, you just did a half a week ago and you did fine. You discovered that you need do be doing your stretching, especially your calves and feet.

Do you have any idea how special you are? You and the other ladies on here, besides being very beautiful people, are making history. There is plenty of research done on runners and running the marathon, but nothing on the sport of distance walking. So we are the cutting edge of discovery.

We have learned that if you have some weeks with a long walk of 8 miles then a strong half is very doable, even under the worsed conditions. The marathon requires some weeks with a 16 miler at least 2.

Here is a suggestion of a 16 week progression leading up to a marathon. You can finish in good shape.

12 weeks prior to marathon with a 2 hour long walk one day each of the preceding 4 weeks. I'm just putting down what you need you can make it fit your schedule.

1st week: 10 mile or 2.5 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

2nd week: 8 mile or 2 hour walk and 4 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

3rd week: 12 mile or 3 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

4th week: 8 mile or 2 hour walk and 4 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

5th week: 14 mile or 3.5 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

6th week: 8 mile or 2 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

7th week: 16 mile or 4 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

8th week: 8 mile or 2 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

9th week: 16 mile or 4 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

10th week: 8 mile or 2 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 3 to 4 miles.

11th week: 4 mile or 1 hour walk and 3 shorter walks of 2 to 3 miles.

12th week: 2 short walks of 2 to 3 miles and marathon on the weekend.

After every walk make sure you do your stretching. Drink water all during the day so you stay hydrated. Eat only real food, no chemical mixes like soda.

Goofy Panda:hippie:

Kim, it is ultimately your call, but the Goofy was my first marathon! In September I started doing back to back workouts to get my body used to the effort.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the NYC marathon is no longer "up in the air"........I'm doing it! :woohoo:

So, Kim, we can "virtual train" together! :thumbsup2

Kim: You have plenty of time. Just build your mileage slow and steady. Don't overdue it and become injured.

Hi, Kim!!
You haven't answered the question about the pace requirements for the full. ;)

If you really feel the need to do a marathon before Goofy, then you do have time to get your training in. You've already got a good base. You did a half last week??!! Why is getting the training in for a full in September concerning you?? According to MFM, you would already be doing week 11/12 of training!! :teacher:

One suggestion for this marathon and Goofy ..do not neglect your strength training, core exercises, and as Dave has said, STRETCHING!! These should become just as important as endurance with the mileage.

Do you remember your very first half? and look at you now!! We're proud of you, Kim!!

:goodvibes Anne

Jean: Wahoooo that is awesome. Now I can say I know someone who has done the NYC Marathon!!!!!!!!! I would love to scream team for you but I am sure hotels would cost a fortune that weekend.

Dave: You are the sweetest!!!!.. Thanks for the plan!!!!

Leane: HI!!!! How are you....long time no chat.

Robert: Thanks buddy:hug:

Anne: They there!!!!!. I didn't answer the question about the pace as I couldn't find it on the website but I went and looked again and I believe it is 7 hours which is the same as disney.....huuummmmmmmmm Thanks Anne for the kind words!!!!!!

actually I was looking at the wrong race....boy it was a long day at work...lol

Limit is only 6 hours and 30 mins.....guess that is out.:headache:

Ouch! That extra half-hour means alot to us back-of-the-packers.

yup you got that right. Even if it is just in our mind. It is nice to know we have the extra time.

I did my first half on Feb 15th, and my first full on May 24th of this year (14 weeks apart), and I'm about 40 pounds heavier than I should be (or more).

It can definitely be done, and you can do it!

I just had a thought, Kim.......you might want to check out the mean-leaner thread (or whatever they call it now). It's all about WISHers that want to lose weight before competitions and we have a nice little challenge going that just started. If you like, you could jump right in!
