Is It Possible To Take Photos?

Well said. I've done that every trip, no problems at all, for anybody. Some good pictures, some not so. Once in awhile a great picture.
Enjoy.
OP - Some characters are in open areas and visible to anyone passing by, while others may be in more restricted areas. You are obviously seeking pictures of characters who are in open areas. As long as you keep a respectful distance from the characters, their handlers, the Photopass photographers, and the guests waiting in line, you should be fine. If you can’t snap pictures when the characters are walking to/from the meet and greet, you may be able to snap them (from a distance) between guests. If this doesn’t work, you can just take the picture and crop any guests out of it. You may not get great pictures, but it can be done.

We are going to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas party for the first time and while I'm not interested in meeting the characters I would like to snap a few photos of them. For those who have been to the party before, is it possible to get close enough to take a photo of them without having to do a meet and greet?
if you can do without others kids in I would say go for it but I would be very very careful if others kids are in it. there could be a reason that those parents don't want pics on internet. foster kids some time have this rule as an example. and there is usually not much time between families visiting the characters as next ones are walking up as first leaves

When did the OP ever state she was going to post pictures on the internet? Anybody walking around WDW runs the risk of being in someone else's photo. I don't think OP ever indicated she was going to take pictures of other people as they met the characters.

Again, as I said earlier, random generic shots yes, people are going to be in and taking a picture with a specific child. The characters do not just stand there between shots, they move to the next person.

To answer the original posters question yes you can take pictures of characters whether they are meeting with other kids at the time or not. Be considerate don’t get in the way and don’t use flash though.

Anyone at Disney is fair game to be photographed and posted on the internet as long as the pictures aren’t for a commercial purpose. People might not like that but that’s the reality

My experience this past July is that YES it is possible to take pictures of the characters without standing in line. The two times that I did take pictures of the character in between guests, the handler each time informed me that I could not stop and take pictures and block the walking path.

I’m being serious why not google the photo you want with no ones kids or families in them? What need do you have of taking a photo of a character with you not in it if you can google it???

If you just want pictures of the characters a really good option would be watch the afternoon parade. You will be able to get pictures of all the characters without having to walk all over WDW. If you have Memory Maker you will also get bonus photos of many of the characters so you wouldn't necessarily have to worry about trying to take pictures yourself.

Depending on what the OP wants them for you have to be careful about copyright infringements, not giving credit, etc with photos from Google.

We went to the party November 16. I know DH took a bunch of pics of the characters even though we didn't wait in line to meet any.
Nobody said anything to him and there were no problems.
