Is it possible to take advantage of new discounts with an existing reservation?

If I've already made a reservation and a new discount such as free dining or 30% stays comes out, can I update my reservation for it? Or do I need to cancel my existing reservation and make a new one?

They will apply a new discount to an existing reservation as long as there is availability for your room type. They do it all the time.

As the pp said, as long as there is availability under the promo with the resort/room type you have booked, your existing reservation can easily be modified. The only time a reservation has to be cancelled and rebooked is when you go from one reservation type to the other. So if you have room only booked and want to get a package (i.e., FD), the room only would have to be cancelled/refunded and the package booked, requiring a new deposit. Room only and packages are different reservation systems, so money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other.
