Is it okay to put family first? (Response to royal family stuff)

I think Meghan wanted another bombshell that “no one knows about” to announce via her Oprah platform. It smacks of oneupmanship to me. I also doubt that Oprah didn’t know in advance of the revelation.

So Meghan is either totally clueless about what a wedding ceremony actually is or she's a liar or a little of both.

Or maybe she's just a fool. I mean, how dumb do you have to be to go on basically world wide TV making a claim like that knowing full well that your version of the truth would be scrutinized. It was only a matter of time before somebody talked to someone high up in the Church of England about it.
If she had just said they had rehearsed the ceremony together, said their vows to each other and considered the three days in advance as their real wedding date even when it wasnt legal, then it wouldnt look so stupid. Everyone can understand that if your wedding costs 30 million pound and is broadcasted worldwide, that you want something for the two of you. To get to what it is all about.

I think this is why they should have rehearsed the questions and answers of the interview till their faces turned blue. Then they could have checked some facts themselves.

Then again... this is what they believe is the truth, so that probably wouldnt have helped anyway.

I just realized, that day was my birthday and I was in London that day.

oopsy -- missed this one -- review of the interview on Canadian news (CTV is a privately owned company, but isn't very different ideologically from our federally owned broadcaster CBC)

I tend to agree with everything she said. I wish they had had time for her to go into detail about the "numerous holes" in their statements.

I heard that Harry was listening to the entire interview, so he did know what Meghan had said before he was put on camera. I guess he was ok with what she said because they were actually able to finish the interviews. So strange -- I don't think that's normal. For me this is really about why Harry turned on his family.

As she was previously married, I would think she'd know all about the marriage ceremony. In double-checking my memory, it was noted her dress in that ceremony resembled Kate Middleton's gown for the wedding reception:

I assumed as much as well, however, I prefer to believe he didn't. Because if he did, that doesn't look good on him, because A. he is okay with his wife trashing his family, and B. again, it shows he is not the brightest candle in the box, as he clearly didn't listen properly to match his story with her.

And on the why he is okay with it... I think I am going to watch The Master (2012) tonight.

Angela Levin’s comments were interesting to me, since she interviewed Harry for the book, Conversations with the Prince. Takeaways for me were her describing the couple as self absorbed and the interview including sob stories. She certainly was direct. She also thinks Meghan is in control of Harry and that Harry has always been second to William, now he is second to Meghan. I think of it as being a sidekick but maybe that’s an American thing. Angela Levin’s comment that Meghan didn’t try to understand the RF as she figured out pretty early it wasn’t for her, but that Harry was raised by his parents to have a strong sense of duty to the Monarchy. It makes sense to me, even though I am American.

A really good interview - the first half is about the interview and they dealt really well with the issues of race (which is an extremely difficult issue these days).

They also talk about the Commonwealth a bit. The Queen is still the head of state for Canada and that will not be changing any time soon regardless of what happens. It would require a change in our Constitution and no province wants to open that pandora's box right now.

PS. I really like her room and that's exactly how I would like to do our attic. lol covid times are strange times -- we get to see where journalists and guests live.

Brace yourselves - I am going to say something complimentary! I don't know whose idea it was, but I LOVED Meghan's veil. Whomever decided to have all of the flowers from the commonwealth embroidered was a genius. I think it was absolutely stunning.

Yes, she looked stunning on her wedding day! She certainly is a beautiful woman!

I agree with you 👍🏻, but I think this article doesn’t do a very good job of explaining it, and the pictures don’t show it, either.

Meghan’s wedding dress in her wedding to Trevor Engelson in September, 2011, resembled the gown that Kate had worn to her wedding reception in April, 2011.

...whether she looked "royal" wearing jeans...

I haven't kept up with this thread - what's this about jeans? Many members of the royal family wear jeans often! Especially Kate, for example.

... or clarify who made whom cry over flower girl dresses

It seems very possible BOTH got upset.

We'll never know the true details of any disagreement - but, whatever the disagreement , apparently only Kate made an effort to make amends (whilst pregnant and suffering hyperemesis gravidarum ). Did M even ask Kate if she was OK?

It makes sense to me too, and I like that she elaborated on that by saying that Diana had also raised him to have a sense of duty -- clearly she did. She continued on with her work after the divorce, even though I suppose she didn't have to. Sarah didn't.

I do think Sarah was preoccupied with making money to pay off her debts. Didn’t she do a series of children’s books? Oh and weight watchers.

Can you imagine what would have happened if Diana stopped her charity work?

In the article I read about how “the institution” favored Kate, there were a bunch of contrasting headlines where Kate was portrayed positively and Meghan negatively for similar situations. One example was Kate’s “down to earth style” in jeans but Meghan “didn’t look very royal” in her jeans outfit. The outfits were not similar: Kate looked like she stepped out of the JCrew catalog and Meghan looked like she was hoping not to be recognized (jeans, oversized sweater, hat, sunglasses.) I'm sure she's looked much, much better.

I’m not a royal watcher usually so I was asking if these were the types of media headlines she was upset about — or whether there were “worse”/overtly racist stories, too... and it sounds like it was mainly stuff like this (plus social media comments where people could get pretty vicious.) I’m sure it’s frustrating to be dogged on in the media, but I am surprised Meghan expected “support” from the palace over stuff like that. I can hear my mother’s advice about middle school gossips ringing in my ears: “don’t even dignify that with a response.”

It was the late Norman Hartnell's idea, and it's an old one, circa 1952. The idea was copied from the Queen's Coronation Gown, which had the same representation of flowers, but in her case, they were in their natural colors as well. The V&A interviewed Hartnell about the process he used to design the gown, and it is part of their online exhibits: https://www.vam.ac.uk/articles/silver-and-gold-by-norman-hartnell
(There is even mention of how the Queen thought that doing them all in white would be suitable for a bride, but that since she was older and already had children she thought she could splash out on having them done in color for the Coronation.)

Hartnell died in 1979.

PS: I found a photo of one of Hartnell's embroidery samples for that gown, which is now in a museum in Australia (the sample, that is: the gown itself is occasionally displayed at Buckingham Palace, but it is very heavy and the base silk has yellowed over the years, so they can never leave it out for very long:

At that point Sarah was pretty roundly reviled by everyone; the RF, the British press and the public, with the very odd exception of Prince Andrew himself. Her relocation to America was kind of an informal exile. There was no future for her having any positive impact on her causes or patronages. Her divorce settlement was also nothing like Diana's although the Queen apparently provided a large trust fund for Beatrice and Eugenie from her personal accounts. Cobbling together whatever income she could, from what turned out to be some very unwise ventures, was a necessity.
