Sliced ham lunch meat is $8 a pound here. I got an 8 pound ham for $9 and cooked it a few days ago. It has some big bones!

After having my dog to the vet for eating 3 pork steaks off the counter , the vet informed us that pork is the worse thing for dogs.

It has something to do with the liver not metabolizing it well.

In our experience, pork bones splinter so I would not give one to our hounds. I think a beef knuckle bone that has been slow roasted is ok because it doesn't come apart like that. We generally just give them american beef rawhides and they go to town.

Is rotten hamburger meat okay to give to dogs? Because my dog got into some yesterday (I had it TRIPLE bagged) and dragged it all through the house. The stench was horrific, as was her breath.

Mine ate half a box of Entemanns Chocolate Covered Donuts out of the bottom shelf in my pantry. It went by without incident, however we think we know the culprit.

Yep, that is it! Our dog was soooo sick after eating the pork steaks.

So avoid giving your dogs pork in any form. The just cannot digest it well. All it does is cause them gastro distress.

Never give dogs any cooked bones OR cured meats (no bacon or ham).

A nice raw beef marrow bone will delight your dog and not be too messy, and is healthier and safer than rawhide. Many grocery stores wrap them up for a buck or two at the butcher area (near the tripe and other organ meat)

Just be sure NOT to refrigerate raw bones once your dog has chewed them -- they dry out completely odorless, but if you make the mistake of taking it away and wrapping it up or refrigerating it you will have a horrible stench on your hands! Just let it lie.

My vet has actually started to recommend rawhides over beef bones. This is for my older (10 y/o) shepherd. He claims the rawhides clean their teeth better. And he's seen a lot of broken teeth as a result of beef bones.

But given the choice. My fur-stooges will go for that beef bone over rawhide anyday.

No, as many others have said here~~vets have told me no bones and no ham/bacon/pork. We learned the hard way when our dog got sick from ham she stole off the kitchen counter many years ago. What a mess! We had to shampoo carpets in almost every room of our house. I don't want to get graphic but I will .....it resembled slimy lines of blood everywhere. Really hideous stuff!

Use those bones to make some delicious navy bean soup or split pea soup. Yummy!

My brother gave my 20 pound dog the christmas hambone with out me knowing at first. I could have killed him! She must have pooped 30 times within a 2 day period not all of it made it outside. Dont do it.

I made the mistake of giving our old dog a big ham bone after Christmas one year. She ended up with pancreatitis. She didn't eat for three days and was never the same after that. We couldn't keep weight on her even though she was given all the food she could eat. We finally had to put her on pancreatic enzymes which helped some but was very expensive.

So don't do it!

I wonder if pigs ears are bad too! I've been giving my dogs pig ears as treats for a long time. Not every day or anything. They love those ears though.

You can also buy snouts, but there's just something about seeing my dogs eat noses that is juuuuuust a bit creepy.

Good point. I suspect that pig ears do not have too much meat to mess with a dog's system.

Although I do not give them to my dogs. One of my dogs does not digest "extras" well at all.

He chews on his Nylabone for powerful chewers and is fine with that.

Mine love(d) those too...but oooooooh the aftermath. Three straight days of "OMG...all that came out of one dog?!"

So they may get a small piece of bacon once a month. Other then that no pork whatsoever.

the danger of pig ears is choking (once they're soft enough, the dog attempts to swallow them whole). There have also been people sickened by bacteria from them, but I don't think that's as common.

If you do use rawhide, make sure it's American -- a LOT of rawhide is from Argentina and Brazil and other countries and they use toxic chemicals that we ban to protect our workers (who we don't even want to TOUCH the stuff, let alone INGEST it as we're asking our dogs to do). And always take it away as soon as it's small enough or soft enough to fit inside the dog's muzzle.
