i have been looking at the board..and congrats on all you guys that have lost weight!! i was wondering if i could ask a question..
im 19 and am looking to lose 15-20 lbs..im a very picky eater, and try to eat fruits, but have a hard time eating alot of healthy foods bc i dont like alot of them..I was going to pick out a work out tape..pilates or "The Firm" has anyone tried them and have they worked? im sorry if i shouldnt be posting here...feel free to post back here or email me at Blueeyes101817@aol.com

It's perfectly ok to ask that question here! WISH stands for "We're Inspired To Stay Healthy" and exercise is definitely part of that! I haven't tried the FIRM but did give pilates a whirl. I personally didn't like the pilates but know many here have done it and enjoyed it and could offer more information about it. Welcome to WISH!

Thank you so much for responding..im quite new here and wasnt quite sure if i could post..thank u for being so nice ::MinnieMo

Hi Jen:wave2: and welcome to the WISH board! We're HAPPY to have you post here--please stop by anytime! I do a lot of Firm tapes--almost exclusively. (MelanieC from this board does Firm videos too). At first I found them to be very difficult (my weight was much higher and I had little muscle strength to speak of). I kept up with the tapes as best I could but I can't say I didn't get frustrated--I never thought I'd be able to do anywhere near what the women on the tapes do! I just did what I could, and tried NOT to get discouraged! Fast forward to now, I'm 110 pounds lighter with a great deal of muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance. (I did this with consistent exercise/healthy food choices/portion control--not just Firm videos). I was also able to go from using no weights to 5, 8, 10 and 12lb. dumbells. My exercise routines consisted mostly of the Firm, with some WATP (Walk Away The Pounds) tapes thrown in while I was still building my fitness level. In the begining of December, I started to really get serious about exercise and was doing Firm 6-7 times a week. I went from a size 8 to a 6 without the scale moving. (Some people will see a weight increase when using weights but will still be losing inches as muscle weighs more than fat but takes up less space). I now do three Firm Cardio tapes along with three Firm AWT (aerobics and weight training)weekly, alternating every other day. Monday: AWT, Tuesday: cardio, Wednesday: AWT, etc... I rest on Sundays. You can check out www.collage-video.com for reviews or ordering info.(although I've found videos cheaper elsewhere), but I've found www.videofitness.com to be a great resource! It's the DISboards for fitness video users! I tried pilates, but it just wasn't for me. I enjoy weight work and high cardio. Pilates did help me with bad lower back pain, though. It really stretched me out and made my back more flexible and much more loose. It's all about what works for YOU--some people are pilates devotees! Sorry this is so long--I'm a big Firm fan because I like their style of workout and because I've seen such great results. Glad you posted, Jen, and come back and let us know how you're doing!

Hi Jen!! Just wanted to say Welcome to the WISH Board!! You will find lots of answers to most questions you have here!! We are a friendly bunch and love to support and encourage our friends!! :)

Great, thank you so very much..got almost 3 months....
do you know of any ":"quick tip":" to lose...not quick as in no work..but just want to lose 15-20...going to buy the video tapes tomorrow..believe i am getting "The Firm"

The Firm is good. I have a friend who lost a great deal of weight using The Firm. I love my Winsor Pilates bc I need the "core" strength and tone and Pilates is great for this. Walk Away the Pounds provides me variety and anything that you can do to exercise along with healthy food choice should get you to toning the way you want. I get bored easily and look for some sort of variety until I can get outside to the paths. You definitely need some sort of aerobics movement.

Quick tips: Exercise. Drink lots of water, don't eat after 7:00 p.m. I have another "skinny" friend who says she never eats past 6...doesn't seem realistic to me. Smaller portions, but healty balanced nutrition. Eat breakfast to start your metabolism. If you have the time to do this, it is also recommended to break down your portions into six meals instead of three...not more food, just divide into six...not practical for many. Journal everything you do and eat to analyze what it is exactly that you are doing.

Food-wise, being picky doesn't mean you shouldn't find something healthy. What exactly does "picky" mean? You need to stay away from the colas and desserts and look to other types of foods. What is is you will eat and what is not an option for you? Perhaps we could help if you give us some idea.

Good luck and keep moving.
Keep posting here if you can, it does provide accountability and you can certainly get support from friends here.

hi again :jester:
basically , i dont eat alot of meats, just chicken and pork chops..i cant stand vegetables, so i try to compensate with fruits....i need to cut down on pastas and stuff, but thats basically all i eat...all i do drink now is water...just gets frustrating..i put a picture of a scene from florida on my wall so when i start working out i can hope to get motivated!

Welcome to WISH! It's great to see you here. If you can avoid anything containing white flour and sugar you will find great success. You may need to try a WW eating plan, though, since you seem to be a "picky" eater. That would allow you lattitude in your food choices.

Glad you are here and I just wanted to suggest that you try your local library for videos and see what you do like and then purchase.

I mostly use a treadmill but really like Walk Away the Pounds (WATP) and the firm WATP too and do some things with the exercise ball (Denise Austin). I am like Luvmydogs - I don't do well with pilates but as my DD says it is cross training that it is important.

Feel free to ask questions - everyone here is so supportive - good luck on your journey to being healthier!

Welcome to WISH! I do a lot of "video" fitness. I haven't tried "The Firm" but I am an avid "Tae Bo" freak! LOL I would highly recommend trying those b/c they're fun, inspirational and you will sweat your youknowwhat off! LOL (One of my goals when I get to my goal weight is to become a Tae Bo instructor.)

I also love WATP and also Tamilee Webb's "I Want That Body!" DVD. It's great! Amazon.com has a lot of selections for a pretty decent price. :)

Good luck to you!!

Christiana

thanks so much guys...my one problem is i never get motivated enough to do it..so im hoping i will so i can report i lost some weight!!! For the people that do the firm....do u know where you can get the stepper thing or the weight stick that you need....the onlyways i find them is with tapes included...i dont need tapes, i have a DVD player, not VCR..any ideas? bc apparely you need thse to get the best out of the workout!!! thanks so much

Jen i did'nt order a stick or the steps. I just a great sturdy rubbermaid stool that works just as great and you can find them at your local wal-mart or similar type store. I love the firm and i did the firm ab tapes and watp 2 mile tape during the majority of my loss and i've just recently joined my local gym and i'm so loving the variety at the gym. Best of luck to you

u know, i didnt even think of just using a regular step...why pay 3o bucks for that?? thanks!! also , i keep seeing people write about the watp 2miles and such...i know its walk away the pounds..but what is it? like is it a tape you just walk to or something like that? sorry new to the whole exercise tape thing..but im really ready to lose some weight and lose the fat lol..thanks so much for all your help

Jen, I can't help you with the exercise tapes because I just go to the gym and do 40 minutes on the elliptical and circuit weights (weight machines). I use to just walk or run on the treadmill and then winter came and I just didn't want to go out into the cold (we keep our treadmill in the garage). I like the elliptical machine much better than the treadmill.

Anyway, my husband sounds just like you in regards to eating. You can't put a vegetable anywhere near his plate. He absolutely hates them. He's pretty much pasta, chicken, meat, and potatoes. Oh an of course anything sweet. The only popular diet that he can do is Weight Watchers. You can eat anything you want as long as you stay in your target point range. The key to WW's is journaling everything you eat so that you know how many point you have left.

I have been on it now for 1 month and I have lost 10 pounds. I personally think it's very easy. I actually make it a challenge. Plus this is the longest that I have ever stayed on a diet in my life and I am actually craving to go to the gym. Who would have ever guessed.

All this is well and good, but if you are not committed don't bother...it won't work for you. I have always hated it when people say that "It's a lifestyle change" until this past week when it actually sank in that they were right.

Good Luck to you and if you need anything we are here for you!

Melissa

im definitely committed this time..i have florida as my goal! haha...i did my 2nd workout tonight and im feeling good...starting to watch what i eat....basically if i cut out all sweets and eating smaller portions......i really appreciate all your help , guys..i know i get annoying:D I just really like this board bc i find myself keep ocming back and i really wanna lose some weight this time..thanks!!!:jester:
