Is it odd to be anti-fur but still eat meat/wear leather?

My boss has a very wealthy husband, and he's always buying her a new fur coat. She wore it last week and offered to let us all try it on. I declined, and when she asked why I just said (in a nice way) that I'm against fur. It doesn't bug me that she owns them, but it's just not for me.

Anyway, one of my co-workers said that it's a bit hypacritical to be anti-fur but wear leather. I told her that since I eat meat, including beef, why wouldn't I wear leather? But I don't eat mink or fox or chinchila, so I don't wear their furs.

This all makes perfect sense to me, but maybe I'm wrong?

Any other meat-eating leather wearer's out there that are anti-fur?

I eat meat and wear leather and I'm anti-fur. I don't feel bad about eating meat--survival of the fittest. The leather comes from things that are being killed so that we can eat. Fur coats are different. Those animals are being killed only so rich people can look "good". I also don't like faux fur--I don't see the point.

I kind of agree with your co-worker. I mean fur and leather is a multi-use thing. But the meat is only consumed once. But I also see your point about not eating fox, mink, or chinchilla. People do eat rabbit, though. So I guess, yes, I see it as hypocritcal.

Personally, I have no problem with wearing fur, and if I lived in a colder climate and had the budget for it I would buy some. JCrew had the cutest fur trimmed jackets recently.

Not a flame, just curious, if I still ate beef but didn't wear leather or fur, would I still be a bit hypocritical? Or can only vegitarians be anti-fur?

Everyone draws their line in a different place. I don't eat meat (I do eat dairy and cheese). I buy leather shoes and want leather in my next van. Some people would say that I am hypocritical by wearing leather when I don't eat meat, but I'm comfortable with my decision and it really isn't the business of anyone else. I wouldn't wear fur or even a fur trimmed coat, but I don't condemn anyone else for their decisions. Oh, and I check the ingredients of most foods that I eat to make sure that there isn't meat stock, etc in it, but I do eat s'mores made with marshmallows and have always allowed my kids to have jello. Hypocritical? Maybe, but again that is where I have chosen to draw my line.

Chicago, I was anti-fur long before being vegetarian. I remember having the fur discussion with my dad when I was a kid.

I'm against fur, I don't wear or use leather but I do occassionally eat meat. I'm a big hypocrite but my love for a good cheeseburger overpowers the guilt I feel while eating it.

I feel the same way you do. Animals raised for fur are generally raised in a very inhumane manner, and often slaughtered the same way. They are bred and raised for nothing more than vanity.

With beef cows they generally have a pretty stressfree life and are killed as humanely as possible (although I have to admit that there's got to be better ways) and all the cow is used.

I do'nt eat veal because I feel that the conditions the baby cows are kept in is inhumane.

I eat meat, wear leather etc, but I do not agree with fur. The animals are bred and raised only for their hides and the rest of them is discarded. I have a problem with that. Honestly, if I knew more about how most animals are treated, I would be a vegetarian! But, for now, I figure that killing an animal to make a coat with no other reason for its death is just something I don't want to participate in.

I'm in total agreement. Leather is a bi-product of the animal after the meat is taken. I don't believe that the animal should be wasted - virtually all of it should go somewhere. Raising and killing an animal simply for its fur seems wasteful to me - especially with all of the synthetic materials available.

I am a hunter and will eat venison and moose meat till the cows come home.......but will not wear a fur coat because they are not humanly taken care of or put out of their misery for the sake of a fur.......venison and moose are usually killed by a hunter with one bullet and there are a certain amount of deer or moose that can be taken in that area because of over population and they would die either by not enough food to sustain them or by getting killed by vehicles .......although the moose hunt is for the other reason.......they get hit by vehicles and the people die......go ahead my flame retardent suit is on

Don't worry, i've got no problem with hunters. I used to, but I realized that since man destroyed most preditors, deer and other animals wind up becoming over populated, so they often starve to death (or as you pointed out, get hit by cars).

As long as hunters follow the rules, then I guess it's all right!

I eat beef and pork and wear leather--I hate the idea of not utilizing the entire animal. I am against killing any animal for the sake of their fur, tusks, etc. Therefore, I guess I am anti-fur for myself. I love the feel and look of fur, but just can't bring myself to wear it.

Fur was originally (eons ago) used to keep people warm. It is actually quite efficient at doing so. Faux fur provides a good alternative in today's world.

I prefer not to wear fur, but that's where the faux fur comes in. I have a faux fur coat - not because I want to look like I own a fur coat but because it is very warm. It's a good insulator.

Down is also a great insulator - but then you get into the animal issue again. Plus I look like a giant marshmallow in most down coats.
