Is it normal to retrieve your own bags from storage?

I’ve twice been in the storage area of Bell services, both times because the bell person couldn’t locate my luggage & asked me to help search for it - once at AKL Jambo & once in Rome at the airport Hilton, the guy in Rome actually initially tried to give me someone else’s suitcase. If you travel enough, unexpected things will happen.

Hi! I travel extensively for work. I am a Disney passholder who does one week+ on-site trip per year. This was my SEVENTH time staying at this particular resort. I've traveled overseas. The ONLY place this has happened to me was this particular Disney resort last week. That is something we have in common. Have a great day!

The person you spoke with may not have been a bell person, but a door person, greeter, or dispatcher. They can’t retrieve bags or perform the services of a bell person due to union “rules”. It could result in a grievance due to bell services being a tipped position and the others mentioned, not. Under certain circumstances it is allowed, but not normally. Not making excuses but a possible explanation (which the CM is not going to explain), most guests wouldn’t know about tipped vs non tipped positions and what they can and can’t generally do.
It was a bell person. They were standing behind the bell person's desk doing nothing. They said they had to wait while the guest went through his luggage in the back, which was in front of my luggage.

It was my first day at the resort and I had been up since 4:30am. My room was not ready until 5:10pm. Once it was ready, I wanted my luggage to go with me to the room. I waited 20 minutes for another guest to get his act together before I had enough and said, 'please get my luggage now'. Not the best way to start vacation.

And I did tip at drop-off and pick-up, even though we brought the luggage to the indoor bell stand and picked it up in the same place.

Next time I know I can go in the back and get my bags myself!

Ugh, I'm so sorry you went through this frustration. A terrible way to start a vacation indeed! My experience was the very last moments before heading home. An otherwise wonderful vacation and here I am on a Disney forum asking if anyone else has ever had to go into the depths and collect their own stuff. Here's to better Disney vacations in the future!!!

I am so sorry that so many of you have had issues with bell services. It makes me thankful that I drive to WDW and that I have a heavy duty luggage cart of my own. I do occasionally use bell services when checking in if I have a larger than normal load, but I don’t go there for assistance until I have my room assignment. It’s always been them loading the cart and starting to walk to the room and I meet them there after I park the car. I do tip before they head for the room. I take things back to the car using my own cart.

He assured me that there was a CM with the guest.

I have to assume it is Disney policy to only let a guest have access to and/or rummage around in the luggage storage area when accompanied by an employee. If they can't locate your bags seems like the only time this would be appropriate. I doubt Disney management would condone an unaccompanied guest looking around the storage area................way too many things can go wrong.

He actually said that the guest 'was looking for a few things from his bags', which made no sense to me, because at that hour (5:15pm) you are either in your room with your luggage, waiting to get your luggage delivered, or getting ready to go to the airport. He said that our bags were directly behind the guest's bags.

The guest may have been checking in and their room was still not ready and may have needed something from their luggage, such as medication. Or, they may have had a very late flight and again, may have wanted or needed something from their bags. They may not been departing the resort until later in the evening. It’s not extremely uncommon for a guest to want to get into their luggage but not have it taken out of storage. It’s easier for the bellman to accompany the guest and let them get what they need instead of trying to figure out what bag to bring out. But as I’ve said before, the guest should never be in the storage room without a CM with them. Things happen.

Bell services at The Polynesian has been repeatedly disappointing for our family. Eye rolls. Hands in pockets. Phone scrolling and acting bothered. Quite pathetic. Who would even tip people like that? We just refuse bag handling as of late.

One of the issues is that guests confuse the valets and the bell services CM's. They all wear the same costume, but valet is third party and can't assist with luggage, so it looks like the bell services CM's are just standing around (they may be). They all tend to congregate in the same area, too. Valets are supposed to abide by all Disney guidelines, but they don't. Bell services also uses phones for their work orders, so it does seem like they are scrolling all the time, but it's not them checking personal texts or email, they can't on the company provided phone. It is actually against Disney policy for a CM to carry a personal cell phone or to even wear an Apple watch. So if you see a CM on a phone, it's not their personal one. But I agree, bell services has not been much of a service, it was not good on my last trip.

I have gone in the back a couple of times at different resorts in order to locate my luggage, but I've never just gone into the back and gotten my stuff unsupervised. That is definitely odd.

OP, is there a reason why you haven't mentioned the resort? I"m curious because we're at POFQ right now and I'll be leaving my bags with bell services for a while on checkout day. So now I'm a bit concerned.

Thanks.
Yeah, I've done this as well. I had stored some things at Bell Services that included an open shopping bag, and after our items were retrieved I noticed something was missing. I asked the bellman about it and he let me go into the back with him to see if it had fallen out (it had, and I got it back), but he stayed with me the entire time, he didn't just send me back there.
