Is it difficult to book a garden wing room at CR?

I'm in the pre-planning stages for our 2009 trip. One of the resorts we are considering is the Contemporary. I would love to get one of the garden wing, standard rooms to save some $$. However, when I plugged in a few different dates for this September just to price compare, garden wing doesn't come up--apparently it's booked already. How far in advance would I have to book in order to get the garden wing, standard view? Do people book a year or two in advance for room only, and then convert to a package later? .

Any suggestions to getting that elusive garden wing room would be helpful!

I originally had the same problem( i changed to Beach club villas)Disney told me they release blocks of rooms at a time.The Cm also said, that since there is now only one garden wing, rooms can be harder to come by.My advice, call back frequently and if an availibility opens jump on it.I waited too long ( several hours) and when I called back it was gone.

I have experienced this, as well.

I started calling to book a 2008 trip in early January. I was booking three rooms at the CR for any weekend I could get anytime from October through early December. I called three times, and every time I was told that it was completely booked on any weekend I asked about.

In early February we recieved a 40% off flyer in the mail, so I called to get the details. The CM asked me what resort I was looking at and when. I told her I needed three rooms at the CR, and she had rooms available to me for every date range on the promotional flyer.

These rooms must have been being held for this or some other purpose the first three times I called. Lucky for me, as I got to book at 40% off, rather than the full rack rate (which I was prepared to pay).

For my families reservation this August at the Contemporary that was made in December 2007 and for our December 2008 reservation that was made last month so we could get exactly what we wanted. The major reason we made them so far in advance is because a major reason is a lot of their rooms sell out fast because of guests who stay there for conventions. So chances are if you are trying to make a reservation that is a long time from the date you would arrive and nothing is available, then it's most likely due to a convention. However if you keep checking everyday and a room might open up and I have read on here that closer to a convention they get more cancellations, so that could mean more rooms that open up.

Conventions organizers are assigned blocks of rooms which are held and available to book until a certain date, even if no one actually books them. Unbooked rooms are released back into general inventory after that date. That's how it works for most conventions, I assume Disney has a similar policy.

I just switched to CR with the garde view room yesterday. it is for the wk of July 4th and I am tryong to change it again today
