Is it December Yet?? Cancelled with a Heavy Heart!

Ok a question for those that have eaten at both Boma & Ohana's (dinner for both).

I'm allergic to coconut. I can tolerate coconut oil in foods, but can't drink the milk or eat the actual coconut meat.

I can't stand the smell of curry (and obviously the taste).

So which is my better option?? I keep reading mixed reviews of Boma's dinner buffet and a number of very highly recommended Ohana's dinner reviews.

I've read both menus.....I will have to be careful at both of them. Boma's has curried items and actually a curry/coconut soup! :scared1: Ohana's has the bread (does that bread get used in the bread pudding dessert??)

I'd like your opinions on the two meals, which would be the better choice knowing the above.......or would it be better to do the Luau dinner show?? (I believe they serve the same bread)

ALSO: Has anyone done the Whispering Canyon Cafe skillet AND the Celebration BBQ at Disneyland??? If so.....compare?? Reading lots of negative reviews of the skillet (and that was the only reason of going, because we thought it would be as good as the BBQ at DL).

Thanx!!!

(trying to keep myself/mind busy today.....otherwise, I just get too sad)

I am so sorry for your loss. What a difficult past few months it has been for your family. Keeping you in my thoughts.

I know you said you wanted to keep your mind off of sad things, so I will respond to your post.

I loved the Boma dinner buffet, but I think based on your allergies, you might want to skip it. I can remember several items in the buffet that contained those ingredients. Have you checked a recent buffet item list? I went in '09.

I have not been to 'Ohana, though a dinner ADR is in the plans. I have heard that the chef is very helpful there with accommodating special requests (especially for vegetarians.) I imagine they will be able to substitute for items you have an allergy. I would just put the request in your ADR and call the restaurant perhaps a few days in advance as well? Of course, mention it again when showing up at the podium.

Thank You  We've definitely have been on a roller coaster ride lately....really hoping life will slow down & get happy!!

Buffets are always a bit scary when dealing with allergies. I know I'll be contacting special diets prior to our trip to make sure Shyann's meals are dealt with & I just need to know ahead of time about the coconut. Usually I can spot it but sometimes it is hidden.

That is a tough one. I would guess since you can't even stand the smell of curry you may want to avoid BOMA. ITs a pretty potent smell most of the time so it might be a bit to much.

As far as the coconut. Disney chefs are great at making sure you don't get things you are allergic too. Just make sure they know ahead of time!

I'm kinda glad I asked.....since I'm not familiar with african cuisine....I had no clue that curry would be a spice they used.

Have you ever done the Luau dinner show??

I have not done the Luau. We did the Hoop de doo Review which I highly recommend, unfortunately it is rumored to be down Oct - Dec. (Not confirmed) No reservations have been able to be made so far for any of those dates but when you call Disney Dining they say they don't know anything about a closure.

I've read those rumors too, that's why I haven't even thought about it. Guess I'll go read up a little more about the luau and see what I can come up with.

I would avoid boma.

I hear chefs at disney restaurants are great with allergies. Make sure noted on adr and remind the server when you are seated.

I am trying to get an Ohanas dinner adr right now for our trip and am having no luck. Hoping someone cancels theirs :rotfl:

DH had the skillet at WCC and he hated it. They promise this big selection of food and it was all tiny portions. The server we had was a real jerk. So we were turned off from the place

I do not know anything about any of the shows, sorry :goodvibes

Thanx Kelly for your opinions.

I've heard that Ohana's is a tough one & we're already planning on the breakfast there (if we can get it).

I've been reading so many bad reviews here in the last couple weeks about the WCC.....so we pretty much decided to replace it with something else.

We have done the Luau in the past. The only thing menu-wise (I THINK) is the bread, which I believe has coconut in it.

The Luau is fun (if you can get over the cheesy actors). The traditional dancers are fun (not as good as a Luau in Hawaii, but still fun). We really enjoyed the food. The ribs were really good, and the dessert was good too.

Being on the Dining Plan, you can book category 2 or 3. We had catergory 1 last time (no dining plan) and looking at the set up of the building, I dont think any of the seating would be bad.

Be sure to mention the coconut allergy in your booking. They do also have a childrens meal you can ask for.

WCC...havent ever done it, but we missed our ADR last time, and everyone still wants to do it, so we will.

Someone mentioned HDDR, you cannot book online for Oct or Nov dates, so it really makes me think it will be closed for rehab then. I read something in one of my weekly emails that did say it was closed from Oct-something until Dec 31, so I wouldnt count on that one being avail.

We did a luau in Hawaii & thoroughly enjoyed the food & entertainment.....we thought this might be a fun way to start our trip out.......so at this point, I'm looking at the luau vs Ohana vs Boma.

The HDDR looks like fun, corny but fun......but with the rumors stating it's done, we haven't even had it on our list of "to do's".

Have to say so sorry! That is so sad.

My mom and dad did the luau at Ohana a few years ago and LOVED it. My daughter and I are doing the luau this year too. I figure I'll always give something a chance and either do it again or not lol :)

I think it would be fun.....we'll have to discuss as a family and make a decision. I was looking at this when we first started planning, but at that time we were looking at the dining plan with 1 qs, 1 ts meals and knew doing a 2 credit meal wouldn't work for us. Now that we've upgraded to the deluxe, we can reconsider doing this!!

I will offer my two cents ...

From everything I have read here & from other friends that have gone, Disney is wonderful about allergies and cross-contaminmation. I don't think you will have a problem at either one. The chef will talk to you and let you know what is safe to eat and maybe even offer a special meal. A friend of ours son is allergic to EVERYTHING and WDW is the one place his Mom feels safe letting him eat.

That said, we didn't love Boma for dinner as others here on the Dis do. I can't really give an specifics, but nothing "wowed" us. 'Ohana on the other hand is an absolute must do. I don't know if coconut oil is used but again, I am sure the chef will be accomodating.

We did not eat at the DL BBQ, but have had the skillet. Again, not for us. We thought the meats were very fatty and greasy. Chicken was Ok. We wouldn't go back.

We LOVED the Luau! I think we went back in '05. It is cheesy but very entertaining and the fire dancers were great. And we all really like the meal, especially the chicken. If you have the two credits to spare, I think it would be a great choice. If not, 'Ohana gets my vote! :thumbsup2

Vicki, have you done the luau?? Just wondering the comparison between that & the Ohana dinner?? I think we're leaning towards a "Hawaiian" dinner.
