Is it crazy to take a 1 month old to disney?

We took DS3 when he was 2 months and it was June. DH had a conference to attend so DD6 who was 3 at the time, me, DS and DM went. We were very careful of the Florida heat and planned accordingly. I too am a germ freak (love the hand sanitizer), however that didn't play into our trip much. I never had 1 person try to touch him, a few characters did stand behind his stroller for pics, but no one ever touched him or even tried to get close. Before we had kids we swore we would never take our kids until they were older, well as I stated DS was 2 months and DD 9 months for their first trips, DD is 6 and ready to take trip # 12 in December and #13 in May and DS3 #10 & #11. So with all that said I say have a magical time!!!!

We have a new baby and have an opportunity to go to Disney. He would be 5 weeks old when we leave. We have two DS that will be 7 and 9 and are a great help. Mom is nursing and has no inabitions for nursing in public. Does anyone have any experience at this age and are there any problems with taking him on rides without height restrictions?:yay:

It depends on when you go. I took 4mo & 12yo by myself. We went in May & it was too hot to have the baby in the sling. I nursed him too. I had him completely covered & people still gave me dirty looks. By the end of the trip, I just let it all hang out. :rotfl: It really wasn't my favorite trip. We'll be going back w/ a small one next year, but decided to wait until she is a toddler & can walk some of the time by herself instead of being carried or strolled everywhere. If you do go, find the babycare centers in every park before you get there. They have rocking chairs in dim lit rooms w/ air conditiioning.:worship:

Nope. Not a great idea. Why would you want to be in a crowded amusement park with a newborn?

Because it's Disney and babies adjust to their environment...and amazingly can sleep thru anything!!

I say go :) I've heard by those who have actually DONE it that it was one of the easiest trips ever...lol... Take advantage of the opportunity :)

With a 2 yr old, and I'm due on Nov 3rd...we're going 12/23 until 1/1....staying at the music resort suites with my parents and DBF and in another suite will be my sister, bro in law, my nephew who will be 1 and her mil, fil, and bil...My dr told me as long as I'm feeling ok and there are no issues when the baby is born than its fine to go...just normal precautions with a newborn and post pregnancy. We also only live an hour away from Disney so it's not so far away...I say as long as your dr ok's it go for it jmo:confused3

We took our son when he was just under 3 months, and it was no problem....he was probably the easiest traveller of all of us because he slept most of the time! What worked for us was to wheel him around in the stroller, and then put him in the Baby Bjorn for standing in line at attractions or for walking between attractions that were close by (like in Fantasyland). I was doing a combination of nursing and bottle feeding...if I needed to nurse and I wasn't near one of the baby centers, I just found the most convenient spot (like a secluded bench or a dark attraction) and threw a blanket over me.

I personally couldn't have done it, I took a little longer to recover post partum with my second than my first and was easily tired. Combined with the baby's unexpected jaundice, and my fear of colic, I wouldn't have stayed in a hotel. BUT, this is your third ( i think??) so mom knows her body best. I figure it will either be the best of trips or worst of trips.

Best of luck whatever you decide!!

I would consider the whole immunity, etc. DS was born in April, and the dr. told us to avoid having him at church or large gathering of people for a couple months. There was a bad flu strain going around. If you're looking at winter months, you'll have a lot of flu strains baby will be exposed to from up north. In summer months, you'll have the heat, which can be rough on the very little ones.

Also, a couple friends have had their babies early, and if that happens, then you have to be especially careful with the premie immune system.

Overall, I would just talk it over with your ped. first and get their comments on how big an issue it might be for germs and heat, esp. for the season you're thinking of going. If you do go, the key to keeping safe from germs will really be how careful you're older kids are - since they're most likely to be exposed/carrying all the germs from their activities all day, and then brining them to baby.

I'm all for taking babies - DS has been 3 times (6 months, 8 months and 13 months), and I'm planning his next trip around 20 months.

when we went last dec, my baby was 2 weeks old! she was so easy slept through everything. i took the graco and she slept in that and in the sling when we went on rides. she went on everything that did not have a high res. also was fine during the fireworks and fantasmic.

like someone else said, we are not germaphobes so normal handwashing worked for us, people ooohhhed and aaaahhhed but no one tried to touch. and while she did wake up a couple times a night it wasnt too bad.

as long as mom is feeling fine (she was my 3rd.....came home like nothing even happened! LOL) then go and have fun!:cool1:

all of your feedback has been tremendous. We are going in 8 days. We are frequent visitors and are not as concerned with doing everything. Mom is feeling great and baby is doing very well. We are really excited about this trip and will take things slow and enjoy ourselves. Our last trip was very somber due to the death of my wife's boss. That trip was theraputic but we really did not enjoy ourselves. Once again thank you for all of your responses and advice.

Good luck on your trip.

Did the pediatrician give the go ahead? I would be curious to see what his/her recommendation is.

I'd be curious too. My pedi is a HUGE Disney fan, owns DVC etc. but he was pretty firm about not taking DD out in too many public places until 8 weeks. If I had asked about WDW, I think he would have fallen over ;)

Our son has never been to the doctor.. he has never been sick. I suppose formula feeding parents and those with children with compromised immune systems would def. want to check with a doctor before going into public places - including your local mall, playground, or heck, doctors office LOL

A brand new baby only has his mother's immunities at first so techniqually you can say that the baby has a compromised immune system. I can tell you that we would never give the go ahead for this kind of trip so soon in the baby's life. We even discourage trips to the mall when the baby is young. The bottom line though is that people are going to do what they want with their own baby, so we can just give advice and hope they take it.

I will never forget the baby that we discharged three days before Thanksgiving. The mom called to ask if she could go and bring the baby to the mall the next day and then to a big Thanksgiving dinner the day after that. I told her we discourage that and reminded her of the discharge instructions. She didn't like my answer, so she called back. They gave the call to me again. Well I said the same thing and she called back again. Actually she called back and spoke to several staff members who all gave her the same advice. I think she was hoping that one of us would give her the go ahead. Actually it became quite amusing after the 6th or 7th phone call to hear what the next staff person would say without any of the rest of us clueing her in to what we said.

I hope all goes well with your decision.
