Is it advisable to efile using the free fillable forms on IRS.gov?

I know it's bumping an old thread up, but OMG, I just found out you could e-file for free on my state (CA's) website!

I've been paying $20 to file the state return (CA) through Turbo Tax for 2 years now. Now I see it's free on the State's website...eek!

I will be doing this from now on!

With the new Heartbleed issue, you would not see me filing any sensitive information online -- at least not until this whole mess is resolved.

If I recall reading, all returns will be required to be filed electronically eventually.

I have argued with my DH for years about efiling our own taxes, yet he insists that we have a CPA do it. He says that using TT or any other online program would not get us the deductions that his CPA can. I'm no tax expert, but we don't have a complicated business or personal form, and it kills me to pay the CPA over $600 every year! Plus, this year the CPA was supposed to file an extension for our S Corp, and failed to do so and yesterday I got a letter from the IRS stating that we owe a $195 penalty!!!!

The turbo tax program doesn't cost that much. Perhaps your husband can still use the CPA and also do it with turbotax. That way you can compare the results.
