My DH and two DD's leave for Japan in less than 2 weeks. Would it be acceptable for my DD's to wear bikinis, or should they wear full swimsuits?

Go on FB and type in Frist time in Japan. there are alot of groups that could help you

My oldest (27yr old) has gone to Japan several times with work (Architect), at pools and beaches bikinis are totally acceptable and common according to her and the norm for many.

She also added that if they go to a hot spring or public bath then it's no swim wear allowed and they give you a small towel, but it's birthday suit.

Yes, in the onsens you don't wear anything but they are strictly separated, men and women.
As an aside, many years ago I was in one in Chiba with a colleague when about twenty heavily tattoed men arrived together. They stood and stared menacingly at the people already there and we all decided it was a good time to leave!
I asked my colleague who they were and why we all felt obliged to leave.
They are Yakuza (Japanese mafia) he said and leaving wasn't going to be optional.

What, you didn't want to stick around, maybe get a card game going? 🤣

If you have tattoos and want to visit an onsen or a gym, check if they allow people with tattoos. Not all do. Tattoos are still associated with criminals.
In Japan, you're not allowed in a waterpark with visible tattoos. No one in my immediate family has one.
