Is insurance transferable?

a question on trip insurance. If you book a policy for specific cruise and then change to a new cruise date, can you transfer the insurance policy? If I understand insurance, if you want a policy with broad cancellation coverage it needs to be done in the first 10 days or so after booking. Is that also correct?

We booked a 4 night Dream for next September 2017 (hurricane season) but will check rates when the October rates come out. Given that we might change, I'm thinking I should sit tight on insurance. If I do that I think it means the policy coverage will be narrower

Any insight would be helpful

Each company has it's own policies as to this. GENERALLY, most companies will allow a one-time change of travel dates. RARELY a company will allow multiple changes.

As to the "broad cancellation coverage" not sure what that means, but, again, each company has it's own criteria for when/what coverages there are.

Did you get your insurance through DCL? Typically, 3rd party insurance has better coverage for a lower cost.

By broad coverage I was referring to the cancel for any reason type of coverage. For some reason I thought you had to elect it in the first 10 days or so. But you can get other type of coverage at about any time before the cruise.

We've only had insurance on 1 of our 7 cruises, but this will be the first during hurricane season

Except for our first cruise (when were ignorant) we've always purchased insurance. Mostly for the medical/evacuation coverage. Many US health plans do not cover out of country, and it's really costly if you have any medical issues while on a cruise.

The first 10 days (or whatever) typically adds in pre-existing medical conditions as part of the coverage at no added cost. If you wait longer, you have to pay for it...or you may not be able to get pre-existing medical conditions insurance coverage at all. "Cancel for any reason" would be one of the benefits to the policy tier you purchase. You can buy cancel for any reason policies a week before you leave...BUT its gonna cost you!!
