Coleman in Calif. Recall Race
Aug 7, 9:58 AM EST

Associated Press

Celebrities are already in the public eye, but some are saying they want to become public servants, too.

On Wednesday, Gary Coleman, the star of the 1980s sitcom, "Diff'rent Strokes," plunked down $3,500 in Alameda County and declared himself a candidate for governor of California. Current governor Gray Davis is facing a recall election Oct. 7.

The diminutive actor has been in and out of legal trouble since the popular show ended, and was recently on the E! series "Star Dates," where stars and singles mingle with mixed results.

Arnold Schwarzenegger also announced his candidacy Wednesday while taping "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." He ended a news conference by telling reporters "I'll be back."

"The politicians are fiddling, fumbling and failing," the "Terminator" actor said. "The man that is failing the people more than anyone is Gray Davis. He is failing them terribly, and this is why he needs to be recalled and this is why I am going to run for governor."

Comedian Gallagher is also gathering signatures.

The celebrities enter a pool of eager candidates hungry to oust Davis, who has seen his popularity plummet as the state grapples with a record $38 billion budget deficit. Davis is the first California governor to face a recall and would be only the second governor nationwide to be removed from office if the effort succeeds.

Popular Democrat Sen. Dianne Feinstein ruled out a run, saying the election was becoming "more and more like a carnival every day."

Meanwhile, Jerry Springer has decided not to run for U.S. Senate after spending about $1 million of his own money crisscrossing Ohio the last six months, speaking at Democratic dinners and gauging support for a Senate bid. He had said he would run if he could "break through the clutter of the show" and be a formidable candidate.

I can see the debate between Arnold and ... Arnold. LOL

"What you talkin bout Arnold?"

LOL hahahaha *cough* ;)

Wake me up when Johnny Depp is running...:smooth:

To do the kind of work that these people do, they really do need to have a certain over-confident sense of self....aka: a big ego. Mix that in with the level of visibility they have and it's easy to notice their every move.

Publicity also translates directly into money for them.

I'd bet that Coleman's $3,500 investment will pay off rather handsomely.

Arnold's political pronunciations of "I'll be back" and "hasta la vista" are fairly comical. But catchy slogans ("Where's the beef?") are not unheard of in the political world, so who knows how effective he'll be using them.

I question the level of sincerity of some of these folks' efforts. I'm sure some of them are in it just for the attention and the money.

As to those that are serious about it, I think their success should hinge on their platforms and the voter's opinion of how successful the candidate might be in implementing their ideas and not on the fact that they are famous. Think Jesse Ventura.

From what I've read, Sonny Bono was fairly effective as a politician, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that a Hollywood type can be successful.

Oh! And given the world of politics these days with photo ops, sound bytes and media blitzes, the line between Hollywood and (Sacramento/Washington/Albany/wherever) is getting more and more blurred all the time....

Well, one of the most popular presidents of our time was an actor who I believe started out as governor of California. I could be wrong on that though.

I'm with you.....pirates in the Whitehouse....but wait a minute...don't we already have pirates in there? ;) :p

I hope Arnold's friend Jesse didn't talk him into this! Now, I didn't vote for Jesse when he became governor of MN, and he had a LOT of problems with PR etc., but he was NOT a politician, and kind of "Told it like it is", and I liked that. Now we have a politician in that office, and all he can do is cut services.

they have to win before they can take over the government. :smooth: :p

Rmember Gopher from Love Boat? He was a politician as well, I think in Wyoming or Utah.. someplace that that.

How about Clint Eastwood with Carmel?

Ronald Reagan, another one.. personally I didn't like him, but thats another story altogehter.

Comedian Galllagher.. pretty funny. I can see him with mallets and watermelon in a meeting room.. all his aides in the office will have ponchos as mandatory work uniforms.

Watermelon slamming aside, if you had heard the rest of Gallaghers works.. it is very politically based.

All I can say is Saturday Night Live is going to have a field day with this when they go back on the air.

Actually, he is from Iowa. I think he was a pretty convincing politically too. Now I think Jesse was using it as a spring board for other things. Not sure about Arnold. I always thought Reagan was a yes man and vote getter front man for his aids. I doubted he was really running things.
