Is Golf Cart Needed?

Do we really need a golf cart? We are a family of 3, fairly fit, staying at the campground for a week. We are able to do our fair share of walking, but don't want to be exhausted: Should we really go through the hassle of bringing the one we already own? Your thoughts are appreciated, JCA1970 :

They are certanly not necessary, but they sure are fun :thumbsup2

There is a bus stop at just about every loop, so you shouldn't end up exhausted, but I find it enjoyable to cruise the campground in the cart checking out site decorations as well as campers.

If you have bikesthey will be fine to provide "non-bus" transportation while crusing around FW.

For folks who don't own one I recomend picking a non-park down day in the Fort and just rent one for that day.

It sounds like in your situation, no, it wouldn't be necessary. It would be "fun" :thumbsup2 but probably not a necessity. Now...this is coming from someone who has never rented one. But I've always gone off season, when it is less crowded and less hot. Maybe the heat and crowds of summer, etc. would make walking to the buses less desirable. I went went my 5 kids, and we walked all around the campground. We loved it. It is very pretty. I do hope one day to rent one, when we aren't 'pinching pennies' so much for our vacation. For example, around Christmas time I think it would be a blast to drive around and see all the decorations. Maybe some day...

Maybe you could do like other posters said and rent one for a day just for the fun of it?

Enjoy your vacation!

I totally agree -- totally not necessary but totally fun. We did exactly what tim5055 recommended. We took a day off from the parks (practically blasphemous!) and spent it at the Fort with a golf cart. If we ever stay there again we would definitely rent one as it was fun to just tool around the campgrounds (ESPECIALLY because it was Christmas time and all the campsites were decorated). It certainly increased the efficiency of getting to and from the campfire, trading post, etc. The dual bus system did leave something to be desired after a long day in the parks....

I don't know if I would describe it as "necessary", but definitely fun! We had one for the whole time we were there in 01, and will rent one for our entire trip this year. Shhhhh - don't tell the kids - it is going to be a surprise! They think we will be relying on bikes! :thumbsup2

Are you staying in the "cabins"..or with your own camper in one of the regular camping loops?

The reason I ask is from my personal experience with the cabin loops..you need the Golf cart. They are removed from the main campground amenities..like the main pool..there is a small pool in one of the cabin loops, but it has no life guard..or snack bar area. You will need to take bus just to get to the main pool..or the Meadow Trading Post area. Not to say that you couldn't walk...but it's not close. Depending on the time of year..it can get pretty hot..you would be better off with the golf cart. At least this was our experience.
If you are planing on being at FW with your own camper, you are much closer to the above mentioned amenities and facilities. I personally have not yet been lucky enough to have the time to bring our camper to FW..but can't wait to do so. I think the camping loops are way more convenient. Also if you have bikes you are able to use them. ..or rent them from the Bike Barn..also located near the Meadow Trading Post. This is also the area you will find the Campfire moves.
Good Luck and enjoy your trip.
I just noticed you mentioned bringing your own..so I assume then that you are using the camping loops. I don't know how much of a bother it would be for you to bring..but if it's not that big a deal..I'd bring it. They aren't cheap..I'm thinking they have to be close to about $50. a day by now..perhaps a discount if you rent for a week..but I'd check the fee first and then make a decision based on what you want to pay. They are definetly a major asset in my opinion. I know when we go to FW we would plan to rent one..at least for part of the stay. I think its part of the fun, and like to explore FW..although we've done that many times by bike when we've stayed at the WL. FW is great you will have a wonderful time.

Thank you for everyone for taking the time to help us out with the information. I haven't found anyone I know who has been to FW to ask: therefore the comments are greatly appreciated. We're gong the end of March and we're really excited already. Thanks again for your time!!JCA

We arrive on March 25th for 8 days at the Fort.

Check with Ms Sundee at the campfire, she always knows where the "DIS" people are. :teeth:

Our spring break does not start until April 8 (messed up school schedule) so we will be checking into the cabins on the 8th and staying until the 15th. We need to be home for Easter morning! Sorry I will miss you this trip! Are you planning a summer trip at all?

We finally cancelled our Spring Break plans (Mar 31 - Apr 9th should hit the system in the morning) but we are still holding onto our May 26/June 11 plans for two whole weeks!!!

Hope to see some of you then

Just an FYI, someone mentioned renting bikes. You can't rent bikes for an extended time like you can rent the golf carts. They are hourly/daily rentals only while the bike barn is open.
