Is fantasmic package worth it in off season?

I was just wondering if anyone has done the fantasmic package in mid december. I'm going on the 13th and was wondering if the package is necessary since its off season. I'm not a big fan of mama melrose which is the restaurant I booked with the package and would rather use my Disney dining plan credit for a different restaurant. Are the crowds that bad at fantasmic in December?

I am interested as well. I have a Mama Melrose 3:30 package on Mon. Dec. 4, which is an EMH evening. Not sure if that will make it more difficult to get a reasonable seat, doesn't have to be the best, without the package. But, 3:30 seems so early to eat, so we may give it up if we can still get a seat. (I do have someone who has expressed interest in the time slot already though!)

No one can predict EXACTLY how large the crowds will be or how early you should go to find a seat for Fantasmic! on any given day.
It has totally to do with the whim of the crowd at MGM on that day, and the general crowd LEVELS.
How much time you wish to "invest" in waiting is a personal decision. We never do the formal Dinner Package, and have always seen the show (dozens of times).

(Take all of these as "average" numbers, sometimes the crowd will be MUCH greater and the theater can fill up much sooner.)

VERY Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 75-120 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
45-60 minutes before: Good seats
20-40 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests.

Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 50-60 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
40 minutes before: Good seats
25-35 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests. (The crowd of "last-minute" arrivals can be slow to get seated before show-time.)

Off-Season (not busy days):
You should be OK to enter by 10-20 minutes before, but you'll likely be seated to the outer edges, and/or way at the back.

If you do the dinner pkg. you can enter 30 minutes before (or a bit later) and still be guaranteed "pretty good" seats (not my "first choice" area, but fine), regardless of crowd-levels.

If there are TWO Fantasmic! shows in one evening, the second one will have lower crowd level than the first one. You can arrive a bit later and still find a seat.

Be aware that the second show waiting area will LOOK like the show is "too crowded".
That's because they HOLD the 2nd crowd outside the theater while the CMs CLEAN it after the first crowd has exited.

Then, they will let those waiting together in that big group IN... all at once, and there will be PLENTY of room.

(The theater holds 10,000 guests!)

We like to eat our evening "meal" while waiting for Fantasmic! to start.
You can bring in items from the counter-service places in MGM, or they DO have concession stands at the rear of the theater serving "baseball stadium-type" food and drinks. Yes, even beer, sold strictly ONE-at-a-time, one-only-to-a-person, so a single person can't go and buy beer for other members of a group... all guests wanting to buy a beer must be present in-person at the counter.
We have a hot dog, maybe a pretzel, later some popcorn or cotton candy (Disney Health Food).

My family doesn't have a problem eating at 3:30 but I originally had this reservation on Dec. 11th which was emh evenings and I switched over the the 13th because I was worried about too much crowds at EMH evenings at MGM. I'm kind of hoping that since the 13th isn't extra magic hours, I might be able to get good seats at fantasmic without the package.

We were glad we had it last Dec., very crowded IMO.

It's becoming a "secret season" esp. for lower point costs for DVC thru 2nd week & various groups 1st week of Dec. (pop warner, mousefest)

We went off season December on a non EMH night (they didn't exist then) on a one showing night when MVMCP was not running. We got there 90 minutes early and it was quite full. By 60 minutes it was standing room only and they stopped letting in guests probably 40 minutes before. The people we sat next to had been there the night before under the same circumstances and said it was much less busy the night before. So yes, I guess I'd have to say it varies as well.

I think it is worth it just for the peace of mind. After many years of waiting hours on the banks of the Rivers of America in the DLR for Fantasmic, I am happy to pay a little extra to just walk in and sit down. Doing it on a full belly is just a bonus. popcorn::

We went mid-January last year and had no problem entering Fantasmic 20 minutes before showtime and getting an excellent seat - just left of center halfway up. I wouldn't have wanted to be any closer because the wind was blowing the waterfalls and even there we were gettting slightly misted.
