Is Facebook too Pervasive and Important?

I think Facebook is too pervasive and important to a lot of people. It's amazing how much information people share. It's also amazing the types of information people share.

The danger I see, is some people put themselves out there "bigger than life". Overstate, antagonize, brag, in attempts to set themselves apart. It's almost as if the people don't really view Facebook as an extension of themselves because they aren't face to face. It's not anonymity but it's not truly, "person to person", either in the true sense. And I think that difference gives a person a false sense of bravado and some run with it. Then they are shell shocked at the consequences.

Why some people feel the need to pretend to be someone they are not is beyond me.. It's not like I'm going to judge you based on what you do for a living and or how much money you make. Heck, you may be smarted than me and have great grammar and writing skills.

The next thing you know, you have a stalker and have created a nightmare for yourself and your family, cause they know everyone's name, number, address, and can use that to create Identity fraud

It is freedom of speech. The burning of the flag, the protesting of soldier's funerals, rallies by the KKK or Black Panthers, and many other not nice speech (or action) is protected by the constitution provided it doesn't become hate speech or a call to action. All speech, even mean speech, should be protected.

I have said time and again, your rights stop at the end of my nose. And when you (general you) are saying mean, spitefull,hateful things about me over and over again to the point of bullying than your "freedom of speech" stops because you have reached the end of my nose.

Not true. A person's right to protect their property could include shooting a burglar. Surly that person's right has just extended past his or her nose and into the burglar's body, where the bullet has stopped.

It doesn't matter whether those things are being said in the classroom, on the bus, on the phone--verbally or through text, or on facebook--when it continues on and on even after the person saying it knows how hurtful it is to the person they are saying it to it IS bullying. And it should be dealt with by someone.

It does matter where those things are being said. You have a different set of rules at work then you do online and a student has a different set of rules in the classroom or on the bus then they do on Facebook. All that matters on Facebook is the law and what the owners of Facebook want to permit. If you find even those too constraining you can set up your owns site and say anything you want provided it isn't libelous. In the classroom you have to abide by the law and school rules. I suspect that the school rules will always be more constraining then the rules of the Internet.

I really hope I never come across you in person, and I certainly hope that if you have children at some point in your life that you won't feel free to tell them that they are ugly, lazy or fat.

I never said I do call people ugly, fat, or lazy, I said I should have the right to do it if I choose. I would also never call my children that even it it were true but I would still have the right to do it. You should have the same right. I suspect neither of us would ever exercise that right but we should and do have it.

I have no reason to ever want to own a gun but according to the second amendment I do have the right to own one if I so choose. Just because I don't plan on exercising that right doesn't mean I don't want it to be protected.


I just don't ever want to see the day that it is decided that only nice speech is protected in this country. There are lots of things said daily I either don't like or don't agree with but I want the people saying them to be free to do so. People get way to up in arms about speech. If you don't like it, even if it is directed at you, just ignore it. Words only have the power you give them so don't give them so much. Words only hurt if you let them.

Have you ever seen a child that was verbally abused? Do you seriously think that child can stop those words from hurting them? Really? Do you really think that abuser has the "freedom" to continue that abuse? Really?

Harrassment and verbal abuse are NOT protected under the Bill of Rights. Harrassment is not the same thing as speeches or burning flags. While despicable, the kkk does have the right to make a speech; just as any other organization does. What they cannot do is go to one person and harrass them or bully them or intimidate them. Nope, can't do it.

Bullying is harrassment and can border on and cross the border into verbal abuse. NEITHER of those things are protected under the constitution.

When someone is breaking into my house, we leave the realm of the right to bear arms or freedom of speech and we enter into the realm of protecting ones property and family. Two different things, deary. And he crossed the line of MY nose, not the other way around. Besides, its a figure of speech. It just means that your rights cannot cross over and violate MY rights.

If a child is told over and over again that they are fat and ugly or stupid and worthless or whatever and just need to die; they WILL believe it. That is the kind of thing that can lead to a child committing suicide regardless of the method used to deliver the words. I cannot believe that anyone with an ounce of intelligence would seriously think that is protected by the freedom of speech.
