Or even worse - they've got the dog back there w/ a leash tethering them to the truck. So, if (God forbid) the dog falls out, he doesn't just fall - he gets dragged behind the truck!
We would take Reilly to the nursing home every day to visit my mom (and the other patients because he became quite an attraction - people would wait for him). Matt would meet me there after work with Reilly so we would have seperate cars.
Reilly would ride home with me. He likes being able to see out the window so I would sit him in my lap in a sitting up/begging position and buckle him in with me using the seat belt. He was happy as a clam (since when are clams happy?) He could get a good view and I had both hands free to drive with.
Have to admit it's stupid but did get quite a few smiles at stop lights
I personally would never do that. Jazz 'wanders' around the car too much - knowing my luck, she would tangle that leash around everything, then I would hit the brakes hard, send her flying, and she'll hang herself.
When we first brought her home as a pup - she would only sleep in DH's lap...when he was driving.
She still wants to be up front...but she's gotten better now and will remain on the passenger side. (we won't leave the windows down far enough for her to stick her head out though)
One time I had her in her big crate in the back of my SUV, bringing her home from the kennel...I hit the brakes to avoid something in the road and her crate went flying against the back seats - along with her poor face. "Grill face" I called her after that.
I have 2 pugs. They both like to wander around the car, hop on my lap, etc., while I am driving. I found this way too distracting and unsafe. I bought special harnesses with clips that fit into the seatbelts. My dogs usually wear harnesses as it is when we go for a walk (as pugs don't have a good neck for a collar) so they are used to them. There is an adjustable "leash" that has a seatbelt clip, so the dog may still move around (a foot or so) and get up to look out of the window, but still won't go too far. Plus, if I am in an accident, my dogs are restrained, and won't become projectiles through the windshield.
I bought my harnesses at www.petedge.com . I know that they also sell booster/car seats for pets as well.
