Is dial-up service available at WLR?

Hi all...I'd like to bring my laptop to Disney and was wondering if it was allowed (or possible, even) to plug into the phone jack in the hotel and access a local number for our internet connection. We've done this before on vacation when renting apartments or houses, but I've never considered whether it was a viable option at a Disney hotel. I'm not sure I'm up to paying the $10 per day for wi-fi...

Any information would be greatly appreciated~

Thanks!

Yes I have heard that is doable.

Someone said they charge for local calls, but when I look at information it said free local calls.. :confused3

Just make sure your internet provider has a local number. And check with the front desk to make sure it is local. Some numbers that appear local are really long distance.

We have an AOL dial up account, and use a local 407 number when we bring our laptop to check email and ebay. We just pay for a local call. We also use the AOL switch user function, so we stay logged on and don't have to pay for a second call when my DH wants to check his own email.

I just spoke to someone at the WLR Concierge desk and she confirmed with the front desk agents that dial up is a standard "amenity" at the WLR and that local calls in the 407 area code are not billed.

Thanks, all!

In our experience, Disney charges something like 50 or 75 cents (it may now be up to $1.00) for each local call. I think the WLR information is wrong.

ElizabethB, were you staying at WLR (or a deluxe resort) when you were charged? Maybe they don't charge at the deluxe resorts but do at the other resorts if dialup is not a standard amenity???

I'm going to call again today and get confirmation (and a name just in case...)~

All WDW resort rooms have dataports on the telephones. A dataport is an analog phone jack that you can use with yout laptop's modem to call out to your dial-up ISP. I used to do it all the time before the high-speed internet was installed in the resorts.

There is a 75-cent charge for all local calls from WDW resort rooms, including calls made through the dataport. Has been for years.

There is no wi-fi in WDW resort rooms. Several WDW resorts have wi-fi internet access in lobbies and other public areas; cost is $4.99 for the first 60 minutes, or $9.95 for a 24-hour period.

All WDW resort rooms have ethernet ports for wired high-speed internet access, which costs $9.95 per 24-hour period. However, you do not have to enable this access for the duration of your stay; you can enable it for one day at a time, whenever you need internet access.

WillCAD, thank you for the information. I just got off the phone for the second time with WLR guest services and although she initially told me there was a $9.95 charge for dial-up, then corrected herself and said that there was no charge for dial-up and no fees for local calls, I finally got her to check with the front desk, who confirmed what you told me...there is a $.75 fee for each local call. I so appreciate having these boards as a resource...

My hope is to use dial-up as needed (without getting cut-off and having to redial)...all I want to do is upload pics to an online gallery to share with family, and have access to the Disney sites as needed.

Thanks again~

If you're goint to be uploading pics, the dial-up access is going to be maddingly slow. You might consider enabling the high-speed maybe once or twice during the course of your trip to upload pics. I know $10 a day is a lot (highway robbery, IMHO), but if you only spend the $10 once or twice a trip it can allow you to upload a lot more pics than the dial-up would, giving you a nice online backup of your vacation pics.
