Is dance a sport?

Yes i do think gymnasts work harder, they do everything that a dancer does except the syncranization(sp). Yes i do realize that syncranizing 10+ dancers is not an easy task but, correct me if im wrong, i dont think there is a judge for every single dancer. When your a gymnnast you have, i think you have more than just one judge judging you. So my point is is that the judges wont catch every mistake you make unlike when your a gymnast. (thats just what i think)

from these two videos, to me it seems that the crowd cheered the most when the team was syncronizing some fast hand/leg movements not when a person did a spectacular trick.

ok just for the record sorry I just have to say this Catalina Ponor is not the worlds best currently Shawn Johnson from the the US is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLRNzihkyus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqB3bk4HZ0I&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1k9FnhCC5w&feature=related and Carly Patterson is the current Olympic champion from 2004 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SvQJhCM1yw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-W2JU_0fCQ&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUHFBmeaIrk&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbvDLtEPpNA&feature=related also i disagree with all your saying all i can see is you have something against dance so you have to let the world know that

No because you don't know what you're talking about and you made an ignorant, stereotypical comment. Have an opinion all you want but don't say things that aren't true to back your opinion. I'd suggest doing research before making accusations like you did.

Um, dancers compete with solos too. So yes 5+ judges can watch ONE dancer.

Here is your ignorance and stereotyping shining though again. I'm glad you think only "African Americans" come from the slums and need to "make it."

And no this is also not true. It is VERY difficult to make it anywhere in any performing art. Companies that want to hire you don't give a crap how much money you have.

1. Im sorry i didnt put the phrase "I think" i thought seeing how that this is an opinon thread i thought people would understand that it was my opinon

2. Yes this is true but when i think of dancing, i think of a group of dancers not a single dancer

3. I cant assume anything with you apparently, Im sorry i didnt put the phrase "for example..."

4. Yes you are right it is very hard to get anywhere in performing art, but the road is alot easyer if you have money. Life is easyer if you have money. Im sure if youd take a survey of 100 people of wiether theyd like to be a billionaire or a homeless person. Atleast 90 people would want to be a billionaire. If you have the extra money, you can pay for the best dance teachers out in the world. These intructors will help you further your dancing profession

sorry i just youtubed it and it was a video that demostrated gymnastics

I dont have anything wrong with dance i just dont think its a sport and i think that gymnastics is harder...thats just my opinon, you guys can argue with me all you want but its not going to change

its ok I know a little bit too much about gymnastics so sometimes I get a little bit snappy sorry

I dont know where you guys are getting the fact that i think dance is easy, ive never said anything about it being easy.

why because you dont agree with my opinon?

Again i dont know where you guys are getting the whole thing about how i think dance is easy.

Yes i do think gymnasts work harder, they do everything that a dancer does except the syncranization(sp). So is dance just a sport about syncronizing a routine?

And about the money thing im more refurring to the african american culture and basketball. You get these african kids that most likely dont have the best parents and not in the greatest life but they play basketball and get good at so raise themselves out of the "slumps" (I know that this is very steryotipical and i do know that all african american kids do not live in the "slumps" and have bad parents, do drugs, get in trouble...)

Umm wow! if you would re-read my post i said that gymnastics is dance (not dancers) on steriods. I never once said that dancers were on steriods. I also said that if you have the money your chance at making it big is more likely to happen. And ice skating is an art, just like dance (Just because its an art, doesnt mean its a sport)

Like i said before you chance is greater to make it big

What really makes me laugh is that yall are trying to prove my opinon wrong :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
NO!
Understandable but there is a different between calling something a "leg circle" and a Rond de jambe. Or between a "spin" and a pirouette.

Exactly
Oh okay lol. I didn't want to offend you :)

It's not syncronizing a routine. It's about bringing something special to a performance.

Ballet-Grace.
Tap/Jazz/HipHop-Energy.
Modern/Lyrical-Emotion.

To get a good performance you need to bring something extra to a dance to make it...a worthy dance.

How do you think that gymnast got so good?! HOURS upon HOURS of practice. We practice just as much as them. The difference is while they're just one person focusing on winning we're one big team trying to win for EVERYONE. Therefore it's harder for us all to be together and work.
Exactly
Yeah, dance is a crazy committment. I thought I was way committed to football. When i watched the video of some of their competitions at my girlfriend's i was amazed by the complexity of everything. I think it's hard to remember my plays then execute them. The things done in dance are mind blowing. She's attempted to teach me some of the names of this stuff, and I end up way confused. It's an incredible committment.
Yeah. I also forgot to put one of the most important and challenging things. keeping your balance.

I just want to chime in on the Dance v Gymnastics debate. Both are no doubt very demanding sports. I however, believe that dance is harder. I have been heavily involved in both, as was my sister, and we have seen the ups and downs of both sports. For us, it was MUCH harder to be a dancer. This was because of the team aspect. It was harder for our dance teachers to get 10, 15, and sometimes even 30 girls to be at the same level and synchronized. In gymnastics, however, the coach can work with a girl indivuadally. All that matters is you doing YOUR personal best. Gymnastics is a hard hard sport, but dance is an extremely demanding sport that builds a family.

Im a Dancer, Ive been dancing for 10 years.

It is most certainly a sport.
It takes a lot of effort and hard work.

I personally dont think cheerleading is a sport.
And its definitely not the same as Dancing.

Dancing takes talent it does. I will not lie.

To call it a sport for me is... just... it doesnt belong.

Its more of an art. I like to paint... people judge paintings for a living, art does take physical activity... would you call that a sport?

I am just trying to get these creative juices flowin from yall!!

Its just a question to make ya think!

:)

I was reading some previous posts, and just wanted to say Dancing is definitely not easy.
Its a huge commitment and takes a lot of skill.
Not just any old person can dance randomly, Im a good dancer because Ive been dancing for 10 years and it takes a while to really get it.
It takes so much practice and time to perfect everything.

Just like any other sport, it takes time and practice. Nothing comes easy.
