Is Castaway Cay Gilligan's Island?

I'm incredibly embarrased to even be typing this, but I need to know...
Last night my DH told me that Castaway Cay was the island shown in the beginning of "Gilligan's Island" and that's why they called it "Castaway Cay". He was told that by friends of ours (who go to WDW and on the cruise several times each year). Is this true?

During our feb 2001 cruise, we were told that the Blue lagoon was Gilligan's Island. In fact, the gift shop there is called Gilligan's gift shop or something like that. We were also told that Flipper was filmed there. Several months later, I watched a TV special on Gilligan's Island. They mentioned the location of the filming which I can't remember, but I remember that they did not mention Blue Lagoon at all. That doesn't mean that they didn't film any of it there, but it seemed like it was primarily filmed elsewhere.

I watched the Gilligan Island special not too long ago and if I remember right, the pilot was filmed in Hawaii and the lagoon was located on the production lot (California) where most of television show was filmed.

I saw a special on the show, too, and I remember about the lagoon being on the lot. But that was for shooting the lagoon scenes. I'm talking about the filmed (not taped) shot of the island in the middle of the ocean that was shown at the beginning and end of the show.
This can't be true, or it'd be common knowledge, right?

We were in Hawaii - Kauai to be exact - and we were told that the film was done there. Beautiful beach but I don't really remember the original Gilligan's Island so could make no connection.

I dont know if this is true, or was just a rumor, but I remember hearing that the private island that the Big Red Boat used to go to was the island that is shown during the theme song of Gilligans Island. I remember going there and as our tender pulled away I had to take a picture of "Gilligans Island".

Thanks, Dave, for the great link. I know more than I ever bargained for when I posted this!! What a tale the author tells...
Definitely not Gilligan's Island, or he'd have mentioned it.
The Big Red Boat story could be what linked the legend to CC.

In 1985 Dh and I took the Big Red Boat - then called Premier Cruise Lines for our Honeymoon - they specifically told us then that the island that they docked at was Gilligan's Island - as Dave mentioned Disney goes to Gorda Cay - not the same place.

This is absolutely true. The official name for Blue Lagoon Island is Salt Cay, the very same private island that was owned by Premier Cruise Line. Along with the aerial island shot from of Gilligan's Island, Flipper was also filmed here. Also, the beach scenes from Splash were filmed on Salt Cay.

Has anybody here been to both Castaway Cay (Gorda Cay) and Blue Lagoon? Which is more beautiful? I just can't imagine more of a paradise than Salt Cay was when we went there in 1989. I'm also trying to remember the island that Premier sailed to in the Abacos when we went there on the Majestic. That was absolutely gorgeous also.

Well, I'll find out for myself hopefully in August! :bounce:

We have done both Salt Cay(I didnt tremember that was the name) and Castaway Cay. OMG, Castaway Cay has it all over Salt Cay. To me, SC was just another beach, plus it was cloudy and drizzly while we were there so that may have swayed my opinion. CC is absolute paradise! The food served at Cookies was the best food of the cruise, IMO. I cant wait to get back there. :)

As far as Flipper goes, most of the original series was filmed in the Keys, more specifically in Marathon at what is now the Dolphin Research Center. I did an internship there four years ago, they still have dolphins that are related to "little Bit" who was flipper, her Daughter is Tursi, and she has had a couple of calves herself, Talon and Pax.

Hey,

My grandfather owned Gorda Cay, now Castaway Cay and I grew up going there and I never heard any reference to Giligans Island until I did book tours for my novels, Paradise Overdose and South Beach, and then different interviewers asked if my family had owned Gilligans Island. I remember I found some web sight on Gilligans Island that said it was Gorda Cay but I never knew where they got the info. My brother wrote the article in Outside magazine on Gorda Cay and he knew nothing about it either. Certainly my grandfather also did not know anything either.

You realize this thread is 11 years old?

Why does that make a difference? I wouldn't have noticed that it was 11 years old until you pointed that out.

I found it interesting....

From IMDB
The island shown in the opening and closing credits is actually located in Kaneohe Bay, about a mile offshore from the island of Oahu, in Hawaii.

I agree. It was also nice to see something different for a change instead of the same 10 questions over and over again. :confused3

Yes, THANK you for bumping this thread! I have been trying to remember and figure out (well, haven't tried *that* hard, really, but have been thinking about it since we booked our trip with my mom for this coming September) what the cruise line was that my family (my parents, my brother (age 23), and me (age 21)) went on in September, 1986, when we did a 7 day cruise + wdw package (I can't remember which place we spent 3 days and which was 4 days). I remember the private island being really cool (and I vaguely recall the dubious claim that it was gilligan's island). We had a fantastic vacation, despite my friends' horror that I was going on vacation and staying in a room with my parents and brother. It was totally the Big Red Boat. :)

Flipper was filmed at the Miami Seaquarium. We saw the set back in the early 80's.

This is how I remember it, too. We were on the Big Red Boat in 1991 and it was my understanding that the private island was "Gilligan's Island."
