Is bringing your own microwave crazy...?

I just got back from working out of town for 2 days and saw all of this. Let me say, I am shocked that this question would elicit such a response. I saddens me that people want to react in this manner. I posted this because, while I knew some people would say "yes, no way I would worry with that on vacation", I thought some ( a few did) would respond affirmatively and tell me their experiences. But of course some posters had to try and make the OP, me, feel ridiculous. I have been using this site for about 18 months, but post rarely. I have read where several others have brought micros with them and thought it sounded like a good idea.

I can afford to eat every meal out and stay at the GF if I wanted to blow it out once a year, but choose to go on vacations frequently and stay and eat more modestly. Just a personal choice.

After this hostile thread I will never post again. I will continue to lurk and take in the information, but will not cause this sort of disruption again because of a harmless questions. I do think the 2 hostile posters should be banned because this is a friendly site where people shouldn't be made to feel foolish because of asking a question. I have never minded constructive criticisim, but not ridicule. This brings my night to a sad end. Sorry to start the controversy.

Thanks Beth and Jinnyboom! Your both right. I was just really tired and already stressed out last night. I feel much better this morning and I am not going to let a few spoil one of my favorite pasttimes, this board. I will continue to post as I feel appropriate. Thanks again for the words of encouragement.

Momx2, I have brought my microware a couple times. I never had any problem using it. Here is what I used it for. I cooked up Taco Meat and made tacos and nachos a couple times. I also cooked up grilled chicken breasts, froze them and then when needed had grilled chicken sandwiches and also made chicken tacos. It was handy heating up any leftover items also. I am like you, with 5 kids sometimes I have to have a budget trip and carry food with me and sometimes I eat out all the time. When you try and spend 30 days a year at Disney it sometimes requires you to be thrifty. By the way the bellhop actually picked it up and put it on the cart at the Wyndam, never said anything.

Was not trying to be hostile...just answered your question and reminded you that offsite accomodations might work out well for you unless onsite is a must.

Apologies if my comments came across as hostile...I think that you will find that I am quite agreeable and helpful at most times.

take care...

30 days a year at Disney!!!!! Wow...... As said I am out of my league when it comes to the fanatism apparent on this board.

But the question remains....... Why are you not staying offsite in much better and cheaper accomodations that provide all this????

Are you stuffing 5 kids in 1 room?

And then the old refrain.... Is this really a vacation when you seem to spend a lot of time preparing food????

Hi there Momx2

I am so sorry that your feeling were hurt. Please do not let a couple of people who made insensitive comments keep you from posting. Most of us understand that there are many ways to enjoy the World and would never dream of calling anyone 'nuts' because they want to do something differently than we might do.

I just chose to think that the people who were so hostile just did not understand that they were doing so. Have been known to put my food in it from time to time myself without doing so on purpose.

I enjoy reading these postings and often learn new things from them. Some things are not my speed but that does not mean that they are not for someone else.

The reason there is more than one park, more than one resort and more than one of anything you might dream of is to fit the purse and passions of the many who come to this magic place.

We leave in 7 days and I am looking forward to seeing many lime green ribbons. Will not let the occasional rude or unfriendly person keep me from enjoying all the wonderful people and experiences I expect to encounter. We go often also and so love the leisurely pace and small magical moments that being in a rush would not allow. My theory is the same as Moms, more time at Disney vs shorter says of luxury. We are retired and have more time and less money.

To those of you who disagree with me about taking a microwave, you are totally right in your opinions just as I am in mine. I am not interested in arguing with you because it is your opinion and that is fine with me. BTW, I use throw away plates for my bit of in room cooking and keep the room as clean as I do my home. My right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins and I would never do anything that might cause harm to another, including calling them "nuts' if I disagreed with them. Maybe it was just a bad day and we will chalk it up to that and go on and maybe learn to be friends?

Slightly Goofy (not totally nuts LOL), Linda

Yes, I think it's a little crazy. There are many places with mini-kitchens (off site suite hotels) and full kitchens (condos, vacation homes and some suite hotels). You can rent DVC points and get a studio at a reasonable price.

I think people who want to cook on vacation should take the time to book accomodations that are setup to handle their needs.

I suspect regular hotel rooms are not wired to allow everyone to bring their own appliances.

Having a construction electrician in my family, I assure you these places are wired to handle it should you bring an appliance. After my FIL rewired my kitchen and various outlets in my 1914 home I'd learned more about what is code than I'd ever wanted to know. The refrigerators the resorts rent draw more amps than a microwave. The real fire hazards are irons and high powered blow dryers. There are blow dryers on the market that my FIL thinks no one should buy, mine included.

Even though we're staying in a timeshare with full kitchen, I'm precooking and freezing so I don't cook on vacation. Then we just pop it in the microwave. While we'd rather stay off site and have 2 bedrooms and other luxuries, I've also stayed on site and rented a frig. We've also stayed recently in 2 hotels that had small frig and microwaves in the room. We hit the frozen section of the local grocery store and got taquitos and salsa - Yum! If you want a microwave, take it, save the money on food, and enjoy the convenience.

Some people NOT OP have talked about bringing or renting a refrig, microwave, hot pot, coffee pot and toaster. I would think some hotel rooms might not have enough amps.

A hotel with a kitchen is wired for the appliances.

Emmalgin,

Well since I won the Wyndham Palace in Downtown Disney for $33 a night thru Priceline, I think electing to bring a microwave is a small price for a nice hotel in a great location.

As a single father of 5 kids yes we all share the same room. It has never been a problem and we always have enough room.

Not much to cooking, since you do it all before you leave, you just heat it up and throw away the paper plates or whatever else you use.

I have stayed on site and off site, from hotel rooms to 2 bedroom units at SilverLake, Boardwalk Villas, and Old Key West. It all depends on my budget, I recommend both, it is what each person wants and can afford is what truly matters, afterall a day at Walt Disney World is better than a day anywhere else.

Try Skyauction.... I've posted plenty of times and if you are looking at a week and can wait 'til the last minute there are tons of choices if travelling offseason.

5 kids at Disney, I think I understand the name Goofy.......

I know a couple of posters aren't going to like this but too bad. To momx2: When we come down to WDW in June 2004, I'm bringing a microwave, stove, bed, food, etc. Just happens to be in our camper. Only way to go IMO. Don't worry about what everyone thinks, bring your microwave if you like, it's your choice.:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I emailed Disney and asked "What is Disney policy on allowing guest to bring and use items such as microwaves, coffee pots, toasters, etc in rooms?"

and this was there response

"With the exception of camping in Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, these items are not allowed. If the resort allows these items, they would make them available for a small fee."

So for me that answers this question. Disney does not allow you to bring a microwave to use in the room.

I don't care about the Disney policy. I have said it is obvious by what is available in the room. That they allow it is based on goodwill.

The point of the post and my comments and Hawt1 and others is that I find it comical the lengths some people go to. Even more silly is the notion it has to be done "on-site" because of the "Magic".

"Screw the rules", I don't care. I just laugh at these "Disneynuts", that you only find at these boards and no others and the things they do.

Imagine someone jetting off to Paris and asking about wattage, because they're bringing a microwave, because of those expensive Paris prices and you know "that weird french food they serve over there".

My very very last words on this subject....Probably the best thing to do is call wherever you are staying and ask for yourself. My resort told me yes to a coffeemaker and a microwave at least in regards to them furnishing them, free of charge. If they say yes, then do what you want. What anybody else thinks about it doesn't matter....even me!:D

Providing them does not necessarily automatically lead to being able to take your own.

It amazes me that this thread has seen so much response and that it seems such a controversial subject. This is the budget board where we share ideas for saving money. If the idea doesn't work for you, fine, but you need not criticize. Microwaves are becoming a more common amenity, although Disney doesn't offer them at all of their hotels. If I were staying on-site for more than the 1 nt we've booked, you can bet I'd toss our microwave in the van. Along side it would be a VCR, too. It takes no more effort than loading a suitcase, so I don't see that it's going to a great length.

Of course they're going to tell you not to take your microwave. They want you to eat at their restaurants.

I find it so ludicrous that people are incensed over this issue.
