Is anyone on this board refusing...

Obviously, I'm one of the "political" posters on this board, so take this explanation for whatever you feel it's worth:

You have to understand, all of us are feeling angry and completely helpless right now. You can't turn on the television without seeing the devastation, and it seems like it took forever for the government to actually get in there and do something. Because a lot of us are already politically inclined, we have turned our frustration to the people responsible for the lack of response, and we want answers. I'd wager that the vast majority of the people on those threads have already donated money in one way or another, and most of those - including myself - are planning on doing still more once things settle down and they start needing more than just cash.

BTW...I was the person that "hugsquared" decided to get personal with on one of those threads. I didn't report the post, no matter how insulting it was, simply because I realize that we on the "liberal" side of the fence are a long way from being the only ones feeling that frustration. Things will settle down, and there will be plenty of time for blame, and plenty of blame to go around. Until then, it hurts nobody for us to discuss what went wrong, nor for the apologists to blame anybody they can save the man at the top.

But yeah...if you don't have thick skin, those threads are probably good places to avoid for the next few days ;)

I respect everything you said. However, it actually does hurt some to discuss it. Doesn't mean you all shouldn't feel free to discuss away. So the advice to stay away from those threads is good for those people that it will just cause further anguish.

I ignore them, they don't serve a purpose IMO.

When Canadians and Germans started gloating, I had to leave. That's it for me for a while.

Without knowing whom you are refering to or what posts you are talking about (because I just can't keep up with it all anymore) I assure you as a Canadian (now living in NY) that 99.99% of Canadians are not and would not gloat over this horrible disaster. Canadian hearts are breaking right along with Americans and as a country Canada will do all it can to help.

Myst

I absolutely know that is true. I was referring to a specific Canadian and a specific German, not Canada and Germany. If I had read any more of that drivel I would have posted something that I'd have regretted. So I'm staying away.

The problem is that debates are popping up in threads that were NOT started as obvious political inspired discussions. It is hard to avoid reading threads (like normal--"here's a way to help" threads) that end up in a few people arguing and name-calling--while the original intent of the thread is lost.

Some of the TITLES of the threads are upsetting to me--especially in a time that we should be banding together--concentrating on strengths and what we can offer instead of fighting and placing blame. I REALLY wish the Debate board was back so those thread titles designed to provoke debate--would appear there, and not covering the first page of the community board.

Some DISers enjoy debating--posting shocking titles--picking apart others' points of view--getting others upset--trying to force their opinions on others. But MANY of us DON'T.

Forgive me fellow non-political DIS-ers...

I couldn't resist commenting on a thread...

I'll go say 10 Our Fathers and 2 Hail Marys.... ;)

I'm done with them. Some of them are downright mean and makes my blood boil. I posted about an observation I had and it took the wrong turn. I asked for it to be locked.
I'm not going to read them anymore and quite truthfully I don't know how much longer I can stay here because it seems every thread is taking the wrong turn and the mood is bad bad bad.
Its sad, this used to be a great pace, now it just raises my blood pressure.

I have started to ignore them now. Yesterday I posted to a couple of them but they seem to be getting a bit rough now. I think I will stick with the nonpolitical threads. I think I will go look at the fluff thread!

After the 9+ pages I read of another thread, I'm not opening any more of them. I typed out a long response and everything, but ended up not posting it. Such a complete waste of time! Some people just don't seem to get the fact, that we all have our opinions and its a complete waste of time to try to switch the other side over to theirs. Why bother, why tear each other down, agree to disagree and go on. I understand everyones frustration with the current situation, but I know personally I can spend that time doing something more useful.

ITA. I like a good debate myself, but this is hardly the time to divide the house. :)

I agree. I find it so very frustrating. There is a 100,000 Square miles of devastation. It's unbelievable how vast that is. There were a million and a half displaced people. I welcome the opportunity when I was a Costco today, to donate money when I paid for my groceries. I know that Big Y and Stop and Shop will be doing the same thing. Besides one donation, we can be reminded everytime we have an opportunity to buy cold milk, soft bread, ice cream, that there are Americans for whom that's a luxury. God Bless our President. He has had so much thrown at him since he has been in office. He needs our prayes and support.

I am avoiding those threads like the plague. I tried reading a few in the beginning but the general tone of them were so ugly and bordering on hysteria that I didn't see how it was helping anything. Now I just stick to the fluff threads.

I agree. I have read through a couple of the threads and even made a few posts, but enough is enough. The catastrophe itself is depressing enough, I don't need to expose myself to any more negativity.

For the most part I stay away from the political threads that bash one another. I do open them, though, and skim over them for the few constructive posts that people have thoughtfully put together, and I like to read those.

Count me in. I got involved with a few Wednesday and yesterday and I'm through. I had the strongest urge to call someone names and so I left. Better to keep my mouth shut!
