Is anyone on the Dream right now? How did a girl fall overboard?

There are some comments on the Reddit thread from people who are saying they’re on the ship and heard from crew that the man is not the girl’s father but is a professional diver.

Also one comment saying the person heard from a waiter that the girl had been climbing on some sort of ladder and fell off. (No idea where one would have been or why her parents/guardians wouldn’t have put a stop to it, if so.)

Either way, I imagine we won’t know for sure until/unless Disney or the girl’s family make some sort of official statement. But I do agree that the Disney rescuers are to be commended, and I’m glad it was a good outcome for the man and the girl.

I mean, he could be both - but being a professional diver would help explain why he had no injuries if that's the case since he likely knows how to dive (though I'd assume he'd need to have been a platform diver from the 27meter platform to really know how to enter the water safely).

And the ladder could also pair with the father wanting to take a picture of her on the rail - if he told her to use the ladder to get on the rail. I don't recall any ladders on the inside of the railing though, so...

The amount of backlash this father is getting based on an unverified REDDIT report is appalling. Let’s wait to pass judgment until we get more facts….

Yeah. Reddit is wild … someone makes a speculation or repeats a rumor and it becomes a “fact”.

I guess everyone who has been on that ship just kind of knows that there is no way to accidentally go overboard if you have two feet firmly planted on the ground.

But kids are wiley and unpredictable. So who the heck knows what happened and I’ll reserve making judgements until we know what actually transpired.

My kid got on an elevator without me at the Grand Californian when she was about 6 … I helplessly watched the door close and my kid disappear. It was the most terrifying 5 minutes of my life - she was just gone. One of us stayed there thinking she’d just stay in the elevator and the other ran to the next floor … but she got off at a different floor. I was positive she was going to be abducted. My husband and I were standing right there when it happened. Luckily, a random Dad found her and delivered her directly to the front desk. I still get anxious when I think about it and that kid is 21!!!

He may have been a professional diver, but to jump in from that height, fully clothed? Open ocean? And then tread water, clothed, from what I can tell from the photos I have seen, is truly something. First rule if you go in unexpected is to shed the shoes and the pants. Too heavy. And then to keep her above water. So lucky...

Oh, I agree about the fully clothed.

I was referring to the apparent lack of injuries from entering the water. Doesn't explain how the kid has no injuries, but it could explain how he has none.

Seriously- the judgement is wild. If you have watched the video of the rescue you can clearly see that the man, weather he is the dad or not, is completely in shock.

We have absolutely no verification of how this young girl fell. Yes- something had to have happened that was against safety rules- none of us know what it was.

If it was the dad and if the story of the railing and the picture is true - then yes it was absolutely a horrible moment of misjudgment and negligence but none of us know if it's true or not.

totally agree with you- she fell, maybe backwards from that height and no injuries?

Yes, a lot of things went right for the man and girl to be rescued and appear as uninjured as they are! Again, I’m very glad it was a good outcome. Many things could have gone wrong.

My point with posting the other claims from Reddit is simply that we can’t know for sure how the girl fell off the ship or even her relationship to the man until/unless some sort of official statement is given. :)

(And I agree that in normal circumstances, with a minimum of common sense employed, the ships are very safe. My family and I got back from our cruise on the Magic with our 5 year old a few weeks ago. We were cautious around the railings and careful never to let her on our balcony by herself, but otherwise never felt it was dangerous.)

My youngest son did the same! He was about 4 and we were at the Hard Rock Hotel at universal. He somehow got back on the elevator after we exited with all our bags and he was gone. Very scary few minutes until we found him!

There was a kid in NYC a couple of weeks ago who stayed on the subway when his parents got off (not sure if the parents jumped out at the last minute or what...he wasn't young, so I'd have been holding a hand). They immediately got the word out (there are a lot more cops around) and he was found safe.

I have had people tell me they are afraid of cruising because they think their kids might fall off. At first I was thinking Disney won't make a statement about it, but after rethinking that it may be in their best interest to explain how this happened. Unless of course they were negligent.

If that was not her father then that is the definition of hero.
Agree. Even if they don’t specifically say what happened. Just a “As a reminder guests should never attempt to climb railings or attempt to sit on a railing” would get the point across

So I found another shot of the boat and the dad looks exhausted and the crew member is holding the girl for safety.. the boat is odd in that I think somebody had to hold her in place.. at that point they have no lifejackets on. so that explains why the girls is being held by the crew member.
