Is Anyone On Here A Veterinarian?

I once had a bunch of baby rabbits. My vet didn't want anything to do with them. I called the parks department and they recommended a place to take them. They took care of them until the were old enough to release. I just gave them a donation.

I called vets and SPCAs and Game Commission, when it comes to an injured animal, I could care less about legalities, all I care about is that it doesn't die and I can help it live a longer happy life.

I understand you were trying to help but I need to echo the sentiments of others who have already posted. You are really lucky because squirrels carry rabies as well as ticks some of which produce Lime Disease. They are not pets they are wild animals. Why do you think your neighbor trapped it? I am betting they are chewing into his house somewhere. They have done this to me twice and each time it cost me over 1000.00 to get rid of them. They can infest your house with fleas. If it makes you feel better why not call your local animal shelter and give a small donation to help a cat or dog that can be saved. In my state the law says once a squirrel is trapped it must be put down. There is a reason for this.

Wow, I'm glad none of you naysayers were around when I nursed two newborn squirrels until they were big enough to release.

I think you did the right thing gr8tpanther. You called all the right people and did your best to keep the little guy from suffering.

You did the right thing gr8tpanther, you followed your heart and saved an animal from senseless suffering. I cannot believe anyone would just watch an animal suffer and not lift a finger to help :(
Here in Houston we have a Wildlife Rehab group that takes ANY animal (bird, squirrel, etc) and nurses them back to health. I have taken them 2 birds hit by cars and one bird I found injured on my in-laws porch.

I just had 3 baby squirrels come up to me like I waas their mother 2 days ago. 2 of them looked like they would die. We put them in a box and kept them warm and called the Howell nature center here in Michigan. They have foster home volunteers that nurse them to health and then release them into their woods. I took them there and the lady was so nice. She puts them on heating pads and starts them out with pedialyte, she says milk is the worse thing you can give them. She was so nice, glad there are people like her to help us.

I know I did the right thing and I don't care what anyone says. My mother used to yell at me all the time, lol, for bringing home things, but I didn't care, I brought them home anyways.

Sadly, we don't have a wildlife preservation park here or a wildlife sanctuary. I wish we did and well, I would try real hard to get a job there :)

This last summer when we hosted a child from Chernobyl Some even thought it was nuts to have her in our home because she would emit radiation!

I'm speechless. Umm, not quite. Morons keeps coming to mind.

I've also taken in injured wildlife. It's been few and far between with successes. However we did rescue a Newborn wild bunny once and raised it until it was big enough to survive on its own.

I do understand the need for caution but I'm with most in saying good for you. It will be a cold day in Orlando before I could sit by and watch an animal suffer.

gr8gtpanther- maybe there are people in your area that have the same feeling as you and would be willing to start up a rescue. The lady I took the squirrels to had about 7 more that she was (foster caring) for. I really think there is a need for this. I am tempted to learn to foster care too. It is such an awful feeling to see an animal suffering and not know what to do.

Well, what made ME mad  was that I called all those who were SUPPOSED to be able to help her. When the Game Commissioner came to get her... he SAID, "the state won't put money into a squirrel"!?!?!?!

What is the difference, it is a still a living breathing creature with feelings just like any OTHER animal.

Tell ya, I wish I was rich!! I would make sure I put every dollar into making that animal healthy again!!

Ok... off my soap box

As for people in my area.. unfortunately, that is the general attitude of the people in my area.

I have lived on the same block for 21 years and I don't know a single person!!! And I am out ALOT!!! Not very social here.

LOL, why you think I spend my day on the DIS?????????? :teeth:

I think it was great that you tried to help the poor little thing. I just hate the thoughts of anything, yes even a snake EEK, suffering.

I never said I would let an animal suffer, or that I would want others to. But to me, it is not worth the risk to my pets and family, so I let the professionals handle it.
Gr8tpanther, did you ever research about starting a wildlife rehab center or about getting a wildlife rehab liscense from your state?

I have done some research in the past, takes money and funding and our area isn't "up" for that. WOuld have to go much deeper than my pockets go and have people willing to do it. I am all about doing something like that.

When I was a child we found a baby squirrel that needed to be nursed. We kept it a week, feeding it with an eye dropper. We called the zoo and they took it! Next time try your local zoo!

We don't have a zoo, but I think that I am going to call the local SPCA back and give them these links on here....

Thank you for helping the little ones that can't help themselves.
