We went to the Paula Deen Lunch & Learn! What a hoot! She is just so funny. She says she can't talk and cook at the same time, and she doesn't like wine. So she was talking and cooking and drinking (the wine she doesn't like!). For those who have never been to a Lunch & Learn, the guest (Paula) cooks, the host (Pam Smith) narrates, and the guest has kitchen helpers (sous chef maybe) on stage (that would be Brandon). So the idea is that she cooks a dish and finishes the dish while simultaneously you are being served the same dish. OK, so this went quite well with Course 1 - "Brie en Croute" (brie cheese in pastry). Paula talked, cooked (drank) and finished the dish. We got a
little behind on the Course 2 - "Marinated Shrimps and Artichoke Hearts". We were served and Paula finished a little bit later. Well, she started Course 3 (Savannah Crab Bakes with Lemon Dill Sauce)and she introduced her husband, Michael, who joined her on stage (prior to this he had started cringing at his table every time she drank a litttle more wine, and started telling, shall we say, rather risque (ok, for Disney
very risque) stories!. By Course 4 - Grandpa Paul's Japanese Fruitcase, Paula just gave up all pretense about cooking. Just like on TV, she showed us the pre-made cake parts and showed how they'd get put together. Then she introduced the pastry chef who had really done the work. We had such a good time. Afterwards Paula was very charming and and her husband was such a good sport. Paula signed everyone's cookbooks if they had one, Michael posed for a picture with my husband, Greg, and Brandon, the on-stage helper. And Pam Smith deserves kudos for her fortitude in just forging on in what must have been a difficult (but hilarious) situation! I hope she'll be back next year!!
