Is anyone cruising with me on the August 27th 2011 Meditteranean Cruise? Hellooooo?

Hi,

I went into my reservation today and it shows as palo dinners still being available? I am booked already so did not go any further in case I got booted out, but maybe have another look? :goodvibes
Thanks! Well hopefully we will see you at the Palo Brunch! :thumbsup2

I have just rung disney as I wanted to know when the character breakfast was to be told they are not doing any on the 7 night med cruise - do you think this is correct :sad1:

I hope not but it might be correct because there are not enough sea days. Character breakfast usually happen on a sea day or a day when the ship gets into port late such as with Key West. For everyone to do the breakfast it has to happen on 3 days, each with 2 seatings. With the second seating it might be pushing 9.30 - 10 am when it finishes so this would affect peoples ability to do morning excursions on this very port intensive cruise.

Speaking of meet ups, did we ever decide on a time and place for the adults (well EVERYONE really ) to meet up on the first day?

I think 2:00 or 2:30 is a good time because it is late enough for people to board, get Palo or Spa reservations worked out, grab a bite to eat and get into their staterooms to drop luggage but a bit before the safety/muster drill and before the fun things (like sail-away party) start.

For a place, I really like the Promenade lounge. It is usually easy to find the group there and that works no matter what the weather. It is SOOOO nice to get together for just 20 or 30 minutes right off and then get to put face with names and start to REALLY make friends.

Works for us. Can we say 2.30 as we first time cruisers may be a little slow getting organised....

Can I ask are your boys into cricket? My daughter is involved with the Yorkshire girls squad and is contemplating bringing the cricket bat but I'm not sure its going to be worth the luggage space if theres not much opportunity for a quick game on the sports court. :confused3

Joy

They are happy to play cricket but are not very good. Soccer is more their thing. They like to join in to any games however so would definitely be up for a scratch game of boat cricket. One of the plastic bats might be a little easier to pack though....

I just checked nothing left for Palo's

Also the Promenade lounge is Deck 3 midship. When you get on the boat there are little maps in the elevators and near the elevators that tell you what level everything is on. The Promenade Lounge is right across the lobby from Guest Services.

The station you want to go to is the Napoli Porta Nolana station (Corsa Garibaldi), which is the terminus of the Circumvesuviano - rather than the Central Station, which is the next stop. Porto Nolana is a smaller station that only has the Circumvesuviano service, and is closer to the ship.

We took a tram to the station, and a taxi back (because it was pouring with rain). Traffic is really bad so its best not to walk IMHO.

If anyone fancies doing it as a group again, we would be happy to join up - but we are likely to have our 3 children (aged 11, 9 and 6) with us. We missed Herculaneum last time because the weather was so poor, so I am keen to do this this time.

pirate:

I have my confidence back, along with a marked up google map on my ipad so we are going to stick with the original plan. We intend to get going as early as possible so if that suits you, and you are interested in sharing a guide we could do that. Our children are 7,10 and 11. We can have a chat on the boat and see if it suits?

Cheers
Anna

spoke to Tiff, agrees kids club on sea day!
So we can go private brunch!

I told her many kids are going kids club(from disboard site) to play for few hours as on sea day all the group will be aboard ship and it is one of the last days to play with friends from disboards/ship and mummies and dadies going to meet up at same time while kids play!
She was very calm, and I told her, rest of day with us!
I simply asked her if wanted to join other kids sea day at club and she said YES.
Oh good:cheer2: I am glad you'll get to join in somehting fun YOU want to do:goodvibes
Works for me! See you there!! :woohoo:
Yay!
can anyone help me please, my fault i should have copied and pasted when i read it - it was details from someone who had gone last year (cant remember that either, as you can tell me memory is good :sad2:) - it was saying about which ports have nice towns right beside it if only want to go ashore for a few hours. I promise to copy and paste it this time :flower3:
Well, we sailed last year. Villefranche is an adorable little town and you are dropped right there. It also has a nice (pebbly) beach only a 5 minute walk from the pier (with bathrooms!). La Spezia is also a very sweet little town and we just stayed there and wandered and enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere on that stop last year.
Where is the promenade lounge please - which floor, and at the front of the back or the middle :lmao:
3rd deck mid-ship.

I have just rung disney as I wanted to know when the character breakfast was to be told they are not doing any on the 7 night med cruise - do you think this is correct :sad1:
Boo-hoo, but I think that is possible for the same reasons Joy said. It is a bummer though.

Am I recalling correctly that cricket is somewhat similar to American baseball? If so, before anyone packs any bats you may want to know that the sports deck and basketball court is not full sized at all. I cannot really see how a bat game would have enough room to work up there. :confused3

austraveler--one of your quotes did not come through. We could go on the alter side for a meet up (2:30) but generally the muster drill is at 3:00 which may make it a little rushed (though I have seen it as late as 4:00----maybe I will sleuth on some of the trip reports and see if anyone can tell me when they have been having it). I am very open--I'll just be thrilled to meet everyone :goodvibes:yay:

@Diane I 've received your message thanks for your great idea. Good that your daughter agreed with staying at the kids club, I am sure she will love it. The problem with my daughters is that the youngest one is too young to go to the kids club, as she is not 3 years yet but within 2 months she will be. If they could go to the kids club together it will be no problem at all, they love to explore but mostly together.

I'm really dissapointed if there will be no character breakfast :sad1:. We were really looking forward to it....Hope everyone won't miss it that much....

Hadley, it is a good idea to meet at the promenade lounge!

There was a Character Breakfast on the 11-night and frankly we wouldn't bother with it if it were repeated on this 7-night cruise. There is no shortage of high quality character inter-action on the cruise - you shouldn't miss a hurried Character Breakfast.

One thing they had on the 11-night cruise was a Wonderland Tea Party on the Sea Days - I don't know if one is planned for this cruise but if it is, that would be worth getting tickets for when you board.

when I mentioned kids private party, I did not mean babysitting, I meant a private character/tea party etc for our kids?

Still have some questions left to tie up some loose ends!

Is it worth buying a wine package pre-cruise?
What drinks are available in restaurants and at what cost?

I agree that meeting at 2/2.30 will be rushing it,as we are boarding/embarking afternoon!
Is it not better to meet up at a family bar in the evening after dinner when everyone has had the chance to relax and get associated with the ship?

What is everyone doing in Naples? We are planning to catch the train to Pompeii and hire a guide there. I am getting a little anxious about the walk to the train station and am considering booking the morning DCL excursion to Pompeii. Is anyone else planning to walk to the station in the morning?

At first, we were planning to walk/taxi to the station as early in the day as possible, and take the train into Pompeii. But, since we'll have a 9 year-old and 7 year-old, we've been considering changing plans to Herculaneum instead.

Sounds like Herculaneum is a lot less walking, more intact ruins (oxymoron?), and may leave the kids in better shape to check out the archaeological museum in Naples in the afternoon.

Anybody here have thoughts on Pompeii vs. Herculaneum?

Anyone interested in a morning group stroll to the station (as I have no sense of direction, and would probably never get there...)?

I started doing some research on the transportation to pompeii/herculaneum at the web site for the train company (http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/homepage).

Here's a link to the train schedule Naples <-> Ercolano - Scavi:
http://servizi.vesuviana.it/Orari/i...aFile.asp?tipo=S&cod_stazione=31&cod_orario=2

And the schedule for Naples <-> Pompei Scavi - Villa Misteri:
http://servizi.vesuviana.it/Orari/i...aFile.asp?tipo=S&cod_stazione=49&cod_orario=2

Plus the parent company site had some maps that looked useful for Naples:
http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en&center=inside&colonna=turisti&action=mappe

and for Pompeii:
http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en&center=inside&colonna=turisti&action=mappe_pompei

For visiting Herculaneum, I noticed that we can either buy an hourly ticket 2.1 euros or a daily ticket 6.3 euros, where the daily ticket is described as:
Valid until midnight of the day of validation.
It must be stamped at the beginning of the journey from a town in fare zone 2 to Naples or vice versa.
It allows to use public transport service in Naples and its suburban services by the Consortium companies.

I'm wondering how to figure out if the "public transport service in Naples" portion is actually useful to wander about town. The consortium listing seems to cover the metro, trains and buses (but on the hop-on, hop-off sightseeing buses). Anyone been to Naples who can comment?

Cricket is played like I imagine soccer is in South America - no matter how small the space, if there is a bat and a ball, kids play. We play at work in the driveway with a "half court" tennis ball that does not fly very far.
I am glad no one is expectign a full sized gym area then:goodvibes I bet they'll have fun.

1. Sorry I thought you meant babysitting at a private event--I read it as you wanted it to occur DURING the adult brunch. my mistake. Regardless, I have never, in 8 DCL cruises, seen or heard of such a thing being offered. You could always ask, however personally there is so much character interaction on the ship and so many activities already I would never have bothered to pay more to add one more item to an already jam packed schedule of possibilities when mine were of an age to get really excited about that. That may jsut be me though:cutie: perhaps others would be happy to join you if you can talk DCL into it :confused3

2. The wine package will be offered on board the first night for the same price as you can prebuy. That will allow you to look around and find out what else is available and at what price before you make a decision:thumbsup2
Milk, tea, coffee, juice, water (still), lemonade, chocolate and soda are all available at no charge in the dining room, at the buffet and (most of those) from the self service drink station on deck 9.
At bars anything you get will carry a charge (even items that you could get free if you go get it yourself at the drink station). Just about any mixed drink you want is available from the bars or in the dining room, as are beer and wine. I cannot help you with prices there. We do not order enough of them to really pay attention. There are also specialty coffees, smoothies and other non alcoholic beverages available from $3-$7--some include cute "kiddie cocktails" that come in glasses with flashing Tinkerbell pins attached (which the kids keep--NOTE these are only available on certain nights, asking about them at other times will not get them--they will ask you and probably come around with a tray of the flashy drinks--they always seem to have them on Pirate night) etc.

Worth noting is that DCL allows you to bring your own alcohol on board (this is rare among American cruise lines). There IS a pretty big "corking fee" if you bring it into the dining room with you (it used to be $15). You are welcome to enjoy it yourself on the balcony or around the adult pool, etc. We have late dining (meaning the show is first) and we like to order some cheese and fruit from room service as we are getting ready for the evening and have some wine and light snacks before we head out to the show;) We will be arriving with 7 bottles of German wine just for this reason:thumbsup2

3. If the group prferes to meet after dinner, that is fine. I will not be there though. I love the opening night show (part production numbers and part a sampling of variety acts unique to that sailing). Then there is nearly always a family cabaret or game between the show and dinner, then dinner and then we are generally running to make whatever fun family event is in Studio C right after late seating dinner and then us adults go straight from there into the nightclub fun:yay: It is my favourite part of the day and done better than on any ship and I am not missing it. Sorry:flower3: The 2:00-3:00 time frame (right before muster drill) is the most "dead time" we ever really get obaord, which is why I suggested it. I have NO PROBLEM with the group deciding to do something else, but I am selfish--I book with Disney because I love all of the fun activities and i am not missing them for a meet up--sorry to be a meanie that way:flower3:
You would also need to decide after WHICH dining seating. I suspect that many Americans with children will already be getting them into bed by the time the late diners are finished, so you may want to factor that in.
ps I do not see any 7 night med cruise reports yet, although have been voyaging since May?
There are only a few 7 night Med cruises. They started with 10/11 night ones in May. Either this week or next is the first 7 nighter.

At first, we were planning to walk/taxi to the station as early in the day as possible, and take the train into Pompeii. But, since we'll have a 9 year-old and 7 year-old, we've been considering changing plans to Herculaneum instead.

Anyone interested in a morning group stroll to the station (as I have no sense of direction, and would probably never get there...)?

We have not been to Herculaneum yet (we will do that the week after this cruise:)) but I can say that we would have felt terribly rushed trying to see Pompeii and the museum in only one day. Pompeii is huge and you can easily spend all day there are not see everything. Also, even if you leave after 3-4 hours ( which Rio and I did, not due to boredom but rather to him being too tired to keep going) all that walking in full sun and heat really takes it out of you. We were too exhausted to properly appreciate anything other than a pool and some ice cream afterwards:rotfl: So, I would say if you are going to try seeing both one of the ruin sites and the museum (which I can totally see if this is your only chance to ever go to Naples) then plan on knowing you will just get a feel for each and not a really in depth look and go in expecting to end the day really tired (especially if you do a full day in Rome the day before as well).

I do know we spoke with several people on our cruise last May who ended up cancelling their Naples excursions they had booked (I do think there is a penalty for cancelling that late, but I am not sure what it is) because they pushed too hard in Florence and Rome and were not up to a third full day of heat and walking--so with the 7 year old I would especially keep that in mind while planning.

I would love to see Herculaneum but I know if I miss the chance to see Pompeii I will be sorry since it is the one I have heard about forever. I know the boys will not cope with two lots of ruins so Pompeii it is.

We plan to get off the boat as early as we can (9am?) and walk to the train station. Any fellow travellers welcome. We are also happy to share a guide at Pompeii if you are interested. If we are still raring to go after Pompeii, we will take a look at the museum in Naples. I have the directions to get there from the train station but we are going to play it by ear depending on how long we spend at Pompeii and how tired we are. Again anyone is welcome to tag along.

Re the meet and greet on the first day, I vote we go with Hadley's 2pm suggestion given her cruise cred. I guess no time is absolutely perfect for everyone but it is only half an hour and I am willing to guided by the voice of experience

Fed Ex JUST NOW delivered our cruise documents!!!!
:yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay::yay:

It always feels so close and so real when I get that little envelope in the mail:goodvibes

Ok so we will meet up at the Promenade lounge (3 deck) at 2:00p!

Yes Hadley has the cruise cred!( Love that..:goodvibes). Hadley I need to write down that pre-and post dinner itinerary you mentioned! Sound awesome. We never made it to those adult venues on our last cruise, but we are definitely checking them out on this one! :thumbsup2

When we went in May we bought the 1-day tickets at a news stand by the cruise terminal. This covered our tram journey to the train station and our return to Pompeii. Our then 5 yr old was free. We could have used the tickets anywhere in (greater) Naples.
