True story...
I was talking to my brother about a month ago and he mentions that he just got AFLAC insurance. He was all excited about how the insurance would pony up some money anytime the kids had to go to the doctors, etc... I thought he was a bit goofy about it, but since DB and his youngest daughter both get sick a lot, it might make some sense to have.
Not two weeks later, DB was injured at work, broke his leg and shattered his knee into 6 or 7 pieces. He'll be out of work for around 6 months at a minimum and will have to have his knee completely replaced. Since DB is a cop in a small town and was injured "on the job", his injury made the local papers. When he called his AFLAC agent, they actually said, "We were wondering when we were going to hear from you! We've got your paperwork all ready for you to sign."
My DH has regular disability insurance through his work, so I don't see the need for AFLAC for us. When DH didn't have disability ins. from one job, we got his own disability ins. policy through State Farm. My understanding is that AFLAC is a bit different from regular disability ins. My brother's AFLAC pays something for each doctor's visit and for each day he misses work. DH's disability ins. covers a percentage of his income in the event he is unable to perform his job due to injury/illness.
