Extinction level events are just not what you want to hear after they already let SkyNet out of the barn.

Right now it seems more like an effort by IT companies to pump up their stock price. Mostly a rather vague concept and everyone is using that term to mean something different. If you ask 5 people what AI is, I bet you will get 5 different explanations. Software is all around us performing many tasks already. A lot of the doom/gloom scenarios sound more like nonsense to me. I will wait until the dust settles to see what comes of this or if it just the latest buzzword to drive stock prices.

No.

We do have to adapt, like we had with the industrial revolution and the invention of internet.

We have to learn with it and make it work for us.

I think it already IS a problem, but not in the way most think. It's not on the cusp of dropping the bombs and wiping out humanity, but it is already letting people rely on it too much, much to our detriment. It's a shortcut, and a lazy and imperfect one at that. I worry about the impact of that. I read a great article about it yesterday. It talks about where it really is at the moment, and where it could go. It's not as advanced as people think it is.

I just watched ExtraPolations on Apple TV …and can not get …
The extinction of 1 female whale remaining and the countdown to the increase in temperatures within a 2 degrees creating a life that gives us a day that the Sun can kill your within 5 minutes so we have a curfew that allows us to maintain sunset to sunrise only …
and sea levels requiring us to wear a pair of boots as we are in buildings with water up to our ankles and finally how your information online and photos and videos are used to steal your identity without your permission after your death .
Not to much ARtificial Intelligence creating a false story within seconds disguising as News Story …

I grew up without air conditioning in home or car so I am trying to retrain myself to not need it automatically without thinking about it .
Living in Florida this Spring with extreme heat thru windows of car waiting at stop sign even tho there are many clouds in the sky and barely in the 80s … I am very aware of concrete and tar…and heat and gasoline emissions destroying the ozone .
In the late 60s early 70s was when I recall Science giving us daily weather alerts for health reasons ,etc.

In college it was a radical thought but ZPG was a term for zero population growth…every human was allowed one offspring choice in a betterhope for the future .

Did you know those cute emojis and texts increase the ozone level and are probably things we should limit .
I should not even be on this board right now … oh dear !
signing out
Have a good day!

Not in the way people think. Companies are already trying to figure out how to use AI to replace writers, whether it be for entertainment or business writing. As AI improves, companies will try to figure out how to use AI to replace other jobs. The problem is that AI is not automation. It's simply replicating content that is fed to it. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. It will always need checks by humans. Will businesses realize this? Who knows. But with the writer's strike, I don't doubt we'll be seeing AI generated content on our streaming services soon enough.

(I'm a writer, so I have a lot of Thoughts about AI.)

I suspect the biggest danger is going to be in the way humans react to the technology. It's never smart to cede control to anyone or anything but people believing these emotionless consequenceless systems can make better decisions than real people is extraordinarily dangerous. When GPS first showed up people followed despite common sense & drove off roads and into lakes etc. What do we think is going to happen when people make marriage decisions, child rearing decisions, healthcare decisions via autopilot? Just bananas

This. The more I read about it the more disturbing it becomes. I am trying to roll with the punches and adapt. I am sure there are numerous benefits to many fields of study but still...

It's a tool to use across numerous fields.

I am hopeful for the future and smart people using it for good, especially in sciences.

Yeah, and let me tell you, it ain't there yet. I have seen this AI created art, and while it can look convincing, it always has this soulless quality about it. It's just a regurgitation of what it "thinks" we want to see. Using AI for writing is going to be a catastrophe. That's not to say that there isn't a case where it could be helpful to writers as a tool, but it certianly isn't a replacement.

I worry about the effects of AI in academia. Any course that uses written work for evaluation will be compromised. How do I know that the submitted papers, lab reports, etc., are original work and reflect the students' knowledge and understanding- or is it all AI generated?

It would seem the only way is for every student to be expected to be able to defend their work conversationally in a respectful space. There would need to be strict controls to prevent kids from being bullied for alternative points of view or for when a kid is way smarter than they look like they should be, this is totally me, I present as pure dingbat but am not. If a kid actually created the work that child should be able to articulate what they think to an impartial 3rd party, maybe volunteer sets of parents could help schools or local college students could get extra credit with this. There are resources, we need to be creative to adapt as quickly as the world changes.

It absolutely will. Not in a Skynet\Terminator sense, but in its ability to be programmed to absolutely control and sway peoples thoughts on everything from politics to religion to entertainment.

Yes.
I’m in the entertainment industry and if I were any of these celebs who have passed on relatives I’d be making sure they aren’t used in voice or looks.

And it’s not just the entertainment industry that is at stake: so much can be a problem-even NCIS LA did a whole season around deep fakes a couple years ago. It can be insanely damaging
