Is 17 years old considered "a child"?

Yes in my eyes that's still a young kid, I went to a twlight thingy with my dd and was embarrassed by some of the moms going crazy over these young kids, it really struck me wrong.
It really does creepy me out big time, enjoying a movie is one thing, losing your lunch over a young kid is another...just gross

17 is the legal age of consent in New York (where I live), so I really don't see a problem with it.

whether or not there are legally an adult and endowed with all of the inherent rights and obligations therein? Or a minor deserving protection from adults. It would be disingenuous to say the only difference is a "day".

Having a 17 year old son myself, I find it kind of "icky" for lack of a better word.
