Which is better?
If I do our taxes online IRS.gov, will I have the same advantages as if I bought a Turbo Tax or other type of tax software?

Thanks guys.

Last time I tried Turbo Tax it was a waste of money..they wanted you to put in all your earnings and taxes that came out but they also wanted your social security that came out of your pay and I have a job where we do not pay into the regular social security program, we have a seperate one that pays more so I ended up not being able to use it....

I just use the turbo tax online site. It works fine for me. :thumbsup2

Did you still have to put in your social security deductions??

If you have a job where you don't pay into social security, that is usually addressed in the question and answer part. Are you sure you inputted everything correctly?

I have used Turbo Tax for years and never had issues. I am not sure what you are talking about, OP, about the benefits of TT vs IRS?

TurboTax is exceptionally good. Not sure why anyone would have problems with the SS deductions. I work a job where I do not have SS deducted, but I have Medicare deducted and TurboTax makes it very easy to handle. TurboTax has the advantage of flagging items that either are mistakes or seem out of whack. Not sure that irs.gov will do that part for you. I have used TurboTax for over ten years and have been exceedingly happy with the product. I can tell you also that it is the #1 program among professional tax preparers (I'm not advertising for TurboTax and have no vested interest in the product, I just work with a lot of paid preparers from multiple states).

I think it would depend on your particular situation. Do you need a program to do more that just figure this year's taxes? Do you need a program that compares this year to previous years? I am sure there are lots of other variables.

Personally, I use a free program. My income is very simple. I don't need a program to compare this year w/ last.

I have H&R block do mine and they use some sort of filing program.

I've used H&R Block's Tax Cut software for the past three years. I get it at the wholesale club and it's quite affordable (and is actually deductable as tax prep supplies are deductable). By sticking with the same software company, it'll check my PC for any previous year's information and it makes filling out the current year a snap...

Not affialiated in any way with anyone in the tax world...

Another nice feature of TT is that once you use it, it really streamlines future years' returns as it populates fields from previous years and asks questions based on previous returns. Plus it is very inexpensive.
