Irritated doggie paws-need advice

My yellow lab's back paws are very raw, dry and irritated. I have no idea what is causing it. Before I go and make a vet appointment, I would like to try and treat it on my own. Has anyone had any success with any over the counter doggie medicated creams or shampoos that would help him? Thanks!!

But have you put down any deicer yet? That irritates paw pads.

Maybe try an antibiotic cream or ointment. I don't think that can hurt. And it may just help.

Our dog had an inflamed paw last year. She just kept licking it and licking it until it was inflamed and quite uncomfortable for her. So a friend sprayed some ointment on her paw, which tastes bad and helps heal the wound (BTW, there was no wound to be seen).

I would head to your nearest pet store and see if they have something like that. It works wonders!

I have a 9 yo black lab that has skin allergies. This makes her lick her paws and near her rear end (of all places) and she now gets dry, flaky patches on her back. Now the weather is getting cooler her back is clearing up. She did go to the vet about it and is on medicine for it and it does help.

The biggest symptom for her was licking her paws. She also has nails that grow all at once and are brittle. We thought she was just a clutz because she had a trip to the vet at least twice a year for a bloody nail but it is part of the allergy.

If you have been noticing your dog licking the paws alot then this could be it. The medicine my dog is on is pretty cheap, only about $5 month. The trick though is hiding the pill in something she won't find it in.

It's likely allergies - you can put something on it but it won't stop the issue at hand just treat the effects of it. I would work on finding the cause while giving the pup some comfort.

I would find a pet safe cream to soothe it since licking off some of our meds can cause him harm. I would also work on figuring out the allergy (food, something outside, etc). Giving benadryl will help with an allergy, your vet can give the exact amount you can give. My Winston loves the bubblegum flavor!
