How, exactly, did the Iron Chefs become Iron Chefs?

Did they compete for it? Were they just chosen? Something else?

I don't know the exact answer to your question, but...
I do love the show. I have a couple of links you'd probably find interesting.
This one is all about what actually goes on when taping an Iron Chef America battle:

This one has Iron Chef has some interesting history about Iron Chef Japan and America
http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/the-history-of-iron-chef/index.html

"Over the history of Japan's Iron Chef and Iron Chef America, injuries have included Masaharu Morimoto being bitten by a monkfish and Hiroyuki Sakai being bitten by a squid. Bobby Flay was the most badly injured when in one episode, he seriously cut his finger and was nearly electrocuted."

Crazy stuff, huh?

Cat Cora, Mario Batalli, Bobby Flay and the Japanese one (not even going to try to spell his name) were all selected. The newest one Micheal Simon was the winner of a contest to pick the next Iron Chef which was a series on Food Network.

Thanks for the revealing article! I really didn't think there was ANY WAY these chefs could conceptualize, prepare, and present 5 dishes in 1 hour using an ingredient they didn't find out about but mere seconds before having to prepare them. I knew they HAD to know what the ingredient was way ahead of time and HAD to know EXACTLY what they were going to do during that hour.

Regardless, I still find the show entertaining. It's probably because I like Alton Brown. I don't know if I would like the show as much without him.

I have seen a couple of shows where the challenger won. But, mostly, it seems that the Iron Chef wins.

There is an "Unwrapped" episode they show occasionally where they show what goes on behind the scenes of Iron Chef and the actual time line. I love Alton Brown also, he definitely makes the show interesting.
