Hi everyone....we are suppose to leave early Saturday from NJ and drive to Myrtle Beach. At this point we don't know what to do with Irene approaching. Any thoughts? Will it be safe to drive??? I keep hearing more about it hitting up here..and I am really getting worried...please help!

I would go west and avoid the traffic jams from other evacuating people, as well as the incoming storm.

Myrtle Beach is expecting tropical conditions from Friday through Saturday. NC is expecting tropical/hurricane conditions at that time. You might want to reconsider your dates.

Place will be closed. You won't be able to go outside with 100 mph winds.
There may be power outages. So you maybe forced to sit inside with nothing to do by look at 4 walls. Even if the storm passes before you leave remember that power may take days to be restored. Remember to have a full tank of gas because no electric means gas stations can't pump gas.

** just heard on the news that they have issued a manatory evacuation so you won't be able to get there.

Depending on where you live in NJ, you will not be able to go far, since there are now states of emergency in NJ and surrounding states.

DE declared a state of emergency last night for all coastal residents to evacuate today.

Rt. 1 on the DE/MD line was closed at midnight last night due to the closure/evacuation of Ocean City, MD; unless you have a deed showing ownership of property there, you will be told to turn around and go back to DE.

I doubt you are going to get very far. And if NC/SC has sustained extreme damage, you will be turned away at the state line as well.

You should be checking the information provided by your local/state government agency as to whether you will even be allowed to be on the roads at that time.

Not sure of your travel route but the Govenor just was on TV and is shutting down the Garden State Parkway south from exit 98 tonight so they can use the routes for evacuation.
