George Bush has arrived at Dromoland Castle in Co. Clare ahead of tomorrow's EU-US summit.
Mr Bush, accompanied by his wife Laura, arrived at Shannon Airport just after 8pm and made the brief journey to Dromoland by motorcade, where he was greeted by the Taoiseach.
The security surrounding his visit is the tightest ever seen in the state with the hotel complex and its surroundings totally sealed off in an operation involving some 6,000 security personnel.
Several thousand anti-war demonstrators were kept at bay at Shannon airport.
Ahead of Mr Bush's arrival, Irish police arrested three protesters on a boat in the River Shannon estuary inside the exclusion zone set up around the airport.
The BBC's James Helm in Dublin says the security measures in the area have angered some locals.
In the past, anti-war protesters have targeted Shannon airport, used as a refuelling stop for American military aircraft.
PSNI ( UK - Northern ireland police ) have had to lend the Irish Police Water Cannons for Mr Bush welcome lol
As John Kirby Bishop of Clonfert and Chairman of Trócaire said ( quote )
The first point to make is that any protest should not be construed as directed at the American people, nor at the visit itself. This visit is critically important for EU-US relations. Rather, any protest should be against the policies of the US administration, on the grounds that they pose a threat to international peace and development.
